Zebulon, NC- The Carolina Mudcats (32-16) played host to the Salem Red Sox (20-28) in a Friday evening contest. The Mudcats entered tonight’s contest 3.5 games ahead of the Lynchburg Hillcats (29-20) in the North Division standing. The Mudcats sent Wande Torres (0-2) to the mound who entered tonight’s game with a 7.36 ERA in 22 innings pitched. The Red Sox sent Luis Cohen (1-1) to the mound who entered tonight’s game with a 3.41 ERA in 29 innings pitched. The Mudcats entered tonight’s game first in the Carolina League in batting average, runs, OBP, slugging percentage and OPS.
Salem struck in the top of the first when Enddy Azocar scored on a double to left field by Freili Encarnacion which gave Salem a 1-0 lead. The Mudcats responded in the bottom half when Eric Bitonti hit a solo home run off the right field scoreboard that tied the game at 1-1. Salem responded in the top of the second when Fraymi De Leon scored on a fielders choice to second by Enddy Azocar which gave Salem a 2-1 lead. Salem struck again in the top of the sixth when Starlyn Nunez and Freili Encarnacion scored on a double to center field by Andruw Musett which expanded the Salem lead to 4-1. The Mudcats responded in the bottom half when Jesus Made scored on a sacrifice fly to left by Filippo Di Turi which cut the deficit to 4-2.
Salem responded in the top of the seventh when Fraymi De Leon scored on a passed ball by catcher Edgardo Ordonez which increased the Red Sox lead to 5-2. The Mudcats responded in the bottom half when Demetrio Nadal scored on a single to center field by Jesus Made which cut the deficit to 5-3. Then, Luis Lameda scored on a walk by Luis Pena which trimmed the deficit to 5-4. The Mudcats continued their scoring in the 7th when Eric Bitonti crushed a no doubt grand slam to right field which gave the Mudcats an 8-5 lead. Salem responded in the top of the eighth inning when Enddy Azocar scored on a 2 run home run to right field by Freili Encarnacion which cut the deficit to 8-7. The Mudcats slammed the door in the top of the ninth which secured the 8-7 win.
Miles Langhorne threw 1 scoreless inning where he allowed no hits and no walk.
The winning pitcher for the Mudcats was Bryan Rivera for his 3 inning where he allowed 5 runs with 3 unearned runs on 5 hits. The losing pitcher for the Red Sox was Jay Allmer for his 1 inning where he allowed 5 runs with 4 unearned runs on 3 hits. Miles Langhorne earned the save for his 1 scoreless inning. The Mudcats exited tonight 3.5 games ahead of the Lynchburg Hillcats in the North Division standing. The Mudcats are back in action tomorrow night at 5:00 pm at Five County Stadium.
