AEW Dynamite was a special ‘Beach Break’ edition this week from Chicago. With Double or Nothing just around the corner, fans were excited for one of the companies larger TV events. It was an exciting evening featuring storylines, a steel cage, championship matches, and more.
Open Of AEW Dynamite
The opening match was a tag match featuring Will Ospreay and ‘Hangman’ Adam Page vs. Konosuke Takeshita and Josh Alexander of The Don Callis Family. It was a physical contest, with the heels seeming in control early, building up the babyface comeback. Page built up the hot tag, and Ospreay went to work. Both babyfaces showed their high flying abilities as well. They won the match by using a tandem tag finisher. Despite being tag partners, the two have an upcoming match at Double or Nothing, and things got heated bewteen the two at the end of this segment.
The next match was Ricochet (with his opponents prostetic leg) vs. Zach Gowen. Gowen is surprisngly agile despite the disadvantage, using it for a style heavy on reversals. He was tough on Ricochet, taking his beating, but continuing to kick out early on. Ricochet was too tough, and gained heat by being so hard on a man with one leg, including jumping him after winning the match.
The Hurt Syndicate On AEW Dynamite
The Hurt Syndicate vs. Top Flight was up next. THS dominated this match, winning within minutes. Bobby Lashley held The Hurt Lock well after the match, causing Dustin Rhodes and Sammy Guevara to appear and call them out. This caused Lio Rush and Action Andretti to show up and claim the right to face Lashley and Shelton Benjamin. MVP pinned the two teams against each other on Collision, with the winner to get a title shot against them.
The Hurt Syndicate stayed in the ring over commercial break, this segment to continue their storyline with MJF. His music would hit, but MJF didn’t show, causing Benjamin to go find him backstage and force him to the ring. Lashley gave him the thumbs up he has been begging for, and MJF was ecstatic. It could be a work, but they will have the official introduction next week, seeming like he is finally in the faction.
AEW Women’s & Men’s Tag Divisions
‘Timeless’ Toni Storm hosted a four-way eliminator match against Mina Shirakawa, AZM (Stardom), and a returning Skye Blue, with a title shot for her Women’s World Championship on the line. There was plenty of action, but it was all soft. Storm stepped up the intensity eventually, but the match was average. Shirakawa reversed a roll-up from Storm into one of her own, winning an opportunity at the title at Double or Nothing.
Nigel McGuiness called Daniel Garcia to the ring to apologize for his actions on Collision. This was an awkward segment, with Garcia trying to convince McGuiness to tag with him against FTR, who then attacked them, only for Daddy Magic to save the day to end the segment.
Beach Break Main Event
The main event of Dynamite Beach Break was a steel cage match for the World Heavyweight Championship – Jon Moxley defending against Samoa Joe. Moxley was bleeding within minutes of this phsyical match. The Deathriders came to help Moxley, but Willow Nightingale and Powerhouse Hobbs came to ensure the match was determined inside the cage.
A champion full of color had Joe in a submission, leading to a near fall featuring answering the ref on the third call. Joe reversed momentmum from there, and things exploded on the outside. Once the action settled, Gabe Kidd slid the briefcase containing the title into Moxley, which he used as a weapon to win the match. At this point, The Young Bucks came to the ring to shake Moxley’s hand.
Kenny Omega came and attacked The Deathriders, only for Okada to appear and attack him. The Young Bucks called for the cage to be lowered back down, the heels keeping Omega and Joe in the ring against the seven of them. If there wasn’t enough people yet, Swerve Strickland headed straight to the ring and started climbing. Jumping off the top of the cage, he somehow took out all of them with a sloppy mix between a splash and cross body. All of this led to the announcing of an Anarchy in the Arena match at Double or Nothing.
