I have been a NASCAR fan for as long as I can remember. Many people would tell you that it is a dying sport with tv ratings and sponsorships declining over the last few years. However, my love for racing has not declined, but my interests are starting to swap to the XFinity Series over the Cup Series and that is going to be a problem.
Any and everyone who watches NASCAR wants to see cars drive wide open, passing, and action. Over the last several weeks the XFinity series has provided that action while the Cup Series has been considered bland and boring by most. Take the Talladega race last weekend, where the Cup Series ran four wide for a portion of the race but not a single car was running wide open. They were all saving fuel making them run closer together. That isn’t racing. I, for one, have loved the racing I’ve seen from XFinity, while the Cup Series leaves something to be desired. So again, I ask the question, do you pay attention to NASCAR and if you do, why? And if you don’t, why?
In my opinion, the Cup Series has gotten far too easy to control the cars and far too expensive for the drivers to take risks that will hurt their budgets. Dale Earnhardt, Jr. has even said that running the Daytona 500 for his one car was pretty costly and the budget is up in the twenty million dollar a year range to fund a single racing team. With TV ratings and sponsorship dipping, that puts more of a burden on the team owners. So what can be done? Can NASCAR get this fixed? Only time will tell.
