Raleigh, NC– On Friday night at the Dail Soccer Complex, the NC State Men’s soccer team (4-0-2,0-0) played host to the visiting Mad Hatters of Stetson University (1-3-2, 0-0) as the Wolfpack looked to extend their streak of wins or draws to 6. For the first time since 2012, the Pack remained unbeaten for the first 5 games. The Tribe entered the match with just 6 goals scored on the season while only allowing 9 to their opponents. The two teams met for the first time in 2023 with Stetson getting 2 goals in the second half to lead the series 1-0
The first half of the match was filled with both teams playing great defense throughout the 45 minutes. Stetson ended the half with just 3 shots and 2 on goal. The Wolfpack would end the first half with just 1 shot. The Mad Hatters were in full control of the time of possession for most of the half and didn’t allow the Wolfpack to gain any progress behind the backline. The Mad Hatters would contain the previously potent NC State offense which was coming off a 7-0 win in their last match.
Stetson would finally break the 0-0 tie in the 30th minute on the goal by Joao Freitas. Freitas would take 3 shots in row to score the goal. He would score on the 2nd rebound off of NC State goaltender Logan Erb. The third shot finally got past Erb to give the Hatters a 1-0 lead. They would carry that lead into the half to keep the Pack down at the half for just the second time on the season.
The second half was more of the same for the Wolfpack as they continued to struggle to score the equalizing goal. Halfway through the second half, the Wolfpack had accumulated just 2 total shots. The Hatters defense proved to be physical and locked in and maintained possession for much of the match. The Wolfpack would remain scoreless for much the match
The Wolfpack would finally get the equalizer… again in the 89th minute. The goal was scored by Donavan Phillip. The assist would be given to Yves Tcheuyap. For the 3rd time this season, the Wolfpack scored a goal in the 89th minute to tie or win the game.
Next up for the Wolfpack is a Tuesday matchup with UNCW at 6PM.
