With the 2023 NFL regular season mere minutes away from kickoff, professional football is finally back, and it’s never been better. Each week during the NFL season, the power rankings will shift and sway as titanic clashes occur, upsets run rampant, and sleepers rise. Without further ado, may I proudly present the maiden voyage of the Greenville Sports Media NFL Power Rankings.
1. San Francisco 49ers
The 49ers have the best roster in the NFL from top to bottom. They’ve got a real shot at winning it if Brock Purdy can stay on the field. Or if Sam Darnold can stay on the field. Or if any quarterback can stay on the field, really.
2. Kansas City Chiefs
You may not have heard, but this Patrick Mahomes guy is pretty good at football.
3. Philadelphia Eagles
They may not be not quite as good as last year, but the Eagles are still pretty darn good.
4. Buffalo Bills
Allen and Diggs back again for another round. Is this their year?
5. Cincinnati Bengals
As long as “Joe Cool” Burrow is healthy, the Bengals will compete with anyone in the league.
6. Dallas Cowboys
The Cowboys have a very solid offense and a borderline great defense. I expect them to be a contender in the NFC.
7. Baltimore Ravens
The Ravens may have quietly become the best overall team in the AFC North.
8. Jacksonville Jaguars
The Jaguars are one of the top young teams in the NFL. If Trevor Lawerence takes the next step, they could contend in the AFC.
9. Los Angeles Chargers
The Chargers explosive offense will keep them in every game, and win a lot of them. But will LA show up when it really matters?
10. Detroit Lions
Expectations have never been higher in Detroit. Now we get to see if the hype is justified.
11. New York Jets
New York’s lord and savior Aaron Rodgers is here. The Jets would be ranked higher, but that offensive line makes me want to go on a darkness retreat of my own.
12. Seattle Seahawks
The Seahawks are an under the radar contender in the NFC. Pete Carroll is building something special.
13. Pittsburgh Steelers
Mike Tomlin has rebuilt his Steelers into a solid team with a potential filled young roster.
14. New York Giants
The Giants added a shiny new toy in TE Darren Waller during the offseason to help a weapons devoid Giants offense. As New York enters year two in Dabolls system there are high hopes for the Giants
15. New Orleans Saints
#15 is the perfect ranking for this Saints team. New Orleans is delightfully mid. Luckily for them, even mid can win the NFC South this year.
16. Miami Dolphins
Can Tua Tagovialoa stay healthy? If so, the Miami Dolphins have the talent to contend. But if Tua can’t stay off the injury report, Miami could be in for a long season.
17. Tennessee Titans
Derrick Henry will carry this Titans team… again.
18. Denver Broncos
New head coach Sean Payton makes this Broncos team interesting. Let’s ride.
19. Cleveland Browns
Solid defense, great RB in Nick Chubb, questionable offense for the Brownies in 2023. Deshaun Watson will make or break this Cleveland squad.
20. New England Patriots
Here’s the thing about New England Patriots teams after Tom Brady: They aren’t bad, but they sure as heck ain’t good.
21. Minnesota Vikings
The statistically worst 13-4 team in history got worse in the offseason. Minnesota is on the way down.
22. Green Bay Packers
The Packers could very easily finish 32nd on the power rankings, but could just as easily finish in the top 10. Green Bay is a true mystery.
23. Atlanta Falcons
The Falcons are young, but talented. A little too young.
24. Las Vegas Raiders
The Raiders have got some playmakers, but can Jimmy Garoppolo elevate them?
25. Chicago Bears
Here’s the problem with Chicago: Justin Fields hasn’t shown that he can throw and his offensive line is still awful. The Bears also have a young defense so that doesn’t help matters.
26. Carolina Panthers
The good: The Panthers have Bryce Young! The bad: Bryce Young is a rookie.
27. Washington Commanders
New owner in Washington, but not a new football team.
28. Los Angeles Rams
The Rams could do better than expected if nobody gets hurt. Unfortunately for LA, star WR Cooper Kupp is already hurt. Not a good omen.
29. Indianapolis Colts
The Colts are very young. Their future looks decent, but they won’t be good this year.
30. Houston Texans
See Indianapolis Colts above. The Texans are another extremely inexperienced squad. Growing pains are an expected part of the rebuilding process.
31. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
I’ve got two words for you: Quarter back. Here’s two more words: Baker Mayfield. Tampa Bay is all aboard the tanking train.
32. Arizona Cardinals
Not much needs to be said about the 2023 Cardinals. Gonna be a long year for Arizona faithful.
