Furman Freshman Alex Wilkins Nominated for National Freshman of Year Award

GREENVILLE, S.C. — Furman freshman guard Alex Wilkins has earned national recognition during a breakout first season, emerging as a contender for the Kyle Macy National Freshman of the Year Award, presented annually to the nation’s top first‑year college basketball player. His nomination placed him among a select group of newcomers whose performances have drawn attention beyond the Southern Conference.

Wilkins has consistently delivered for the Paladins across the 2025‑26 season, establishing himself as a central figure in Furman’s offense and demonstrating scoring and playmaking ability that has put him in rare company among freshmen nationwide. He has started every game for the Paladins, scored in double figures in most outings and produced multiple standout performances against strong competition.

Leading the Paladins’ Offense

Wilkins’ season includes several impressive individual performances that have underscored his value to Furman. In non‑conference action, he scored 23 points while adding seven assists to help Furman defeat the Queens Royals early in the season, a performance that showcased his ability to carry the scoring load while also creating for teammates.

Later in the year at Orlando’s ESPN Events Invitational, Wilkins scored 26 points and keyed a late run to lift Furman to a narrow victory over Richmond, a moment that highlighted his capacity to take over games in high‑pressure situations.

Across his freshman campaign, Wilkins has consistently been among Furman’s leading scorers, often guiding the Paladins’ offense through stretches when they faced double teams or tough defensive looks. In league competition, he led Furman in scoring in several contests, including a 19‑point effort against conference rivala Wofford.

National and Conference Recognition

The nomination for the Kyle Macy Award — named after the former Kentucky standout and presented to the nation’s top freshman — reflects Wilkins’ impact on a broader stage, beyond the SoCon. The early attention has placed him on the radar of voters for Southern Conference Player of the Year as well as national award ballots.

Wilkins’ emergence also marks an important milestone for the Paladins’ program, which has seen increased visibility this season thanks in large part to his production and leadership. His ability to handle the ball, make plays for others and score in a variety of ways has helped Furman stay competitive throughout a stretch that included strong non‑conference tests.

What Comes Next

The list of finalists for the Kyle Macy National Freshman of the Year Award is expected to be announced in March, with the winner to be revealed later in the spring during events surrounding the NCAA Tournament. If Wilkins reaches that round, it would cap a remarkable first season and further validate his place among the country’s most impactful freshmen.

As Furman continues its campaign in Southern Conference play, Wilkins’ consistency and ability to lift his team — even in challenging environments — will be a focal point for both league opponents and national observers. With nominations now coming in, his season stands as one of the most notable freshman campaigns in mid‑major college basketball this year.
