Furman Visits Samford in Key SoCon Matchup as Paladins Aim to Hold League Position

SAMFORD, Ala. (AP) — The scene is set for a spirited midweek Southern Conference clash as Furman makes the trip to face Samford on Wednesday night, with both teams navigating a crowded league race that leaves little margin for error. The calendar has turned toward the grind of conference play, and games like this often carry weight well beyond the standings. Tipoff at the Pete Hanna Center is scheduled for 6 p.m., with familiarity and urgency baked into the matchup.

Paladins Built on Balance and Growth

Furman enters Wednesday positioned near the top of the Southern Conference standings at 6–2 in league play, fueled by steady execution and a rotation that continues to evolve. The Paladins have won with offense, defended well enough to close games and rebounded consistently, particularly away from home. Their identity has sharpened as conference play has progressed.

That growth was evident earlier this season in a 77–73 win at Samford, a game Furman settled late after several momentum swings. The Paladins controlled the glass in the final minutes and limited transition chances when the Bulldogs tried to speed the game up. Execution, rather than pace, defined the closing stretch.

Freshman Alex Wilkins led the way in that first meeting, scoring 28 points and repeatedly exploiting defensive lapses. His confidence has continued to rise, and he has become a reliable scoring option who commands attention on every possession. Wilkins’ emergence has opened space across the floor and added balance to Furman’s attack.

Johnston Anchors the Interior

One of Furman’s most significant developments has been the emergence of Charles Johnston in the frontcourt. Johnston has brought physicality, rebounding and rim presence that has stabilized Furman’s interior play. His ability to finish defensive possessions has been especially valuable during tight conference games.

Johnston’s impact showed in the first meeting with Samford, where Furman won key rebounding battles late. Since then, his role has expanded as his consistency has improved. Against a Samford team that thrives on quick runs, Johnston’s presence inside remains critical.

Bowser’s Expanded Role Adds Depth

Cole Bowser has also become a more prominent piece of Furman’s rotation as his minutes have increased. Bowser provides energy, defensive versatility and timely contributions that often swing momentum. His ability to guard multiple positions has given Furman more flexibility late in games.

With additional playing time, Bowser has grown more comfortable within the offense and more assertive defensively. His development has added depth and balance, allowing Furman to withstand foul trouble and maintain intensity across extended stretches.

Samford’s Guards Drive the Challenge

Samford remains dangerous at home, where the Bulldogs rely heavily on guard play and tempo to generate offense. Keaton Norris sets the tone, functioning as both a facilitator and scorer while controlling pace. When Norris is able to dictate rhythm, Samford’s offense flows more freely.

Dylan Faulkner and Jaden Campbell provide perimeter scoring punch and are capable of flipping momentum in a matter of possessions. When Samford finds early success from the outside, the Bulldogs can stretch defenses and force opponents to adjust quickly. That perimeter threat remains central to Samford’s approach.

The Bulldogs will look to push the game early and create transition opportunities. Furman’s ability to defend without fouling and limit live-ball turnovers will be essential to keeping Samford from building confidence.

What to Watch Wednesday Night

Rebounding and ball security sit at the center of the matchup. Furman’s ability to finish possessions limits Samford’s rhythm and keeps the game within the Paladins’ preferred tempo. Shot selection and late execution could decide the final outcome.

This game will not decide the Southern Conference title, but it will shape the race. A Furman win strengthens its position near the top and reinforces the continued growth of its rotation. Wednesday offers another test of poise, balance and maturity as the season moves deeper into February.
