MACON, Ga. — Furman’s women’s basketball team walked into Hawkins Arena on Thursday night and dragged Mercer into a grind. By the final horn, the Paladins had imposed their will, securing a 60–49 Southern Conference road win built on defense, rebounding and composure.

The victory kept Furman firmly in the league race while snapping Mercer’s momentum at home. What unfolded was not flashy, but it was authoritative, especially after halftime.

Second-Half Shift Turns the Game

The opening half unfolded at a deliberate pace, with both teams struggling to find offensive rhythm. Furman led by a narrow margin at the break, leaning on interior toughness and defensive rebounding to stay ahead.

Momentum swung decisively after halftime. Furman sharpened its ball movement and attacked the paint with purpose, turning defensive stops into controlled offensive possessions. The Paladins outworked Mercer during a pivotal third-quarter stretch that shifted the tone of the game.

Furman never relinquished control in the fourth quarter. Each Mercer push was met with patient offense, timely rebounds and stops that slowly widened the gap.

Coyle Controls the Paint

Clare Coyle delivered one of the night’s defining performances, finishing with 18 rebounds to anchor Furman’s interior play. Her presence limited Mercer to one shot per possession and extended Furman trips on the offensive end.

Coyle’s rebounding proved especially valuable during the closing minutes. As the pace slowed, her ability to secure possessions allowed Furman to dictate tempo and protect its lead.

Ervin, Utomi Supply the Scoring

Alyssa Ervin led Furman with 20 points, repeatedly attacking seams in the defense and converting at the free-throw line. Her shot-making halted Mercer runs and steadied Furman during critical stretches.

Stephanie Utomi posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, pairing physical interior scoring with reliable defense. Her poise showed late as Furman executed clean sets and avoided turnovers.

The Paladins received additional contributions throughout the lineup, reinforcing a balanced approach that kept Mercer from keying on any single option.

Mercer Fades Under Pressure

Mercer remained within striking distance early, fueled by defensive energy and home-court urgency. The Bears battled on the boards and contested shots, but consistent offense proved difficult to sustain.

As Furman’s defensive pressure increased, Mercer struggled to generate clean looks, especially from the perimeter. The Bears finished 3 of 19 from three-point range, a number that underscored Furman’s disciplined rotations.

Key Sequences Decide It

Furman’s decisive run came midway through the third quarter, when consecutive stops sparked a scoring surge that pushed the lead beyond one possession. Mercer never fully recovered.

Late in the fourth, Furman’s rebounding sealed the outcome. Each defensive stand ended cleanly, allowing the Paladins to bleed clock and close with confidence.

What It Means

Furman left Macon with more than a win. The Paladins showcased a brand of basketball that travels — defense, rebounding and patience under pressure.

As conference play tightens, performances like Thursday’s offer a clear blueprint. When Furman controls the glass and dictates tempo, it becomes a difficult out anywhere in the Southern Conference.
