Paladins Dominate in SoCon Home Win, 69–38 Over Western Carolina

GREENVILLE, S.C. (Jan. 17, 2026) — Furman’s women’s basketball team delivered a commanding performance from start to finish Saturday afternoon at Timmons Arena, rolling past Western Carolina 69–38 in Southern Conference action. The Paladins (11-8, 3-1 SoCon) fed off a raucous home crowd and completed the most lopsided win of their conference slate to date, while the Catamounts (3-15, 0-4 SoCon) struggled to find offensive traction against Furman’s stifling defense.

From the opening tip, Furman set the tone with defensive intensity and balanced scoring, building a halftime lead that the Catamounts could never seriously challenge. The Paladins held Western Carolina to just 11 points in the first quarter and never looked back, setting up one of their more complete efforts of the season. Furman’s stifling halfcourt pressure and disciplined execution in transition translated into a 31-point margin that underscored its depth and athleticism on both ends of the floor.

Balanced Scoring and Defensive Control Fuel Paladins

Furman rode contributions up and down its rotation, turning early opportunities into sustained momentum. Sophomore guard Alyssa Ervin paced the offense, finishing with 17 points on efficient shooting and knifing drives that consistently disrupted Western Carolina’s defensive schemes. Junior forward Clare Coyle dominated the glass, finishing with 12 rebounds and anchoring Furman’s presence in the paint, while guard Chantelle Stuart added six assists to orchestrate the Paladin attack.

The Paladins’ pressure defense forced Catamount turnovers and limited Western Carolina’s halfcourt sets. Furman converted its defensive stops into transition opportunities, pushing the pace when possible and converting key buckets that extended its lead before halftime. The result was not only a lopsided scoreline but also a statement performance that highlighted Furman’s depth and defensive identity in league play.

Catamount Struggles on Both Ends

Western Carolina never found sustained offensive rhythm. The Catamounts shot 21 percent from the field and managed only 17 percent from beyond the arc, while Furman rotated quickly and contested shots with physicality. Western Carolina’s Taj Hunter led her team with nine points, but the Catamounts struggled to string together consistent scoring runs as the Paladins’ defense dictated the pace.

Western Carolina’s early second quarter surge briefly slowed Furman’s offensive flow, but the Paladins quickly responded with crisp ball movement and defensive pressure that stifled the Catamounts’ attempts to claw back. Furman’s ability to convert turnovers into points proved decisive in building a lead that widened steadily throughout the second half.

Dominant Inside and Outsets Up Paladins

Furman’s balanced attack was a defining feature of the afternoon. The Paladins shared the ball effectively, with multiple players contributing to a high assist total and spreading the scoring load. Coyle’s work on the boards and Ervin’s ability to attack closeouts created repeated opportunities for Furman to convert on second-chance possessions and open looks from deep.

Defensively, Furman’s frontcourt disrupted Western Carolina’s attempts to establish position in the paint, and perimeter defenders contested shots without fouling, forcing the Catamounts into tough, low-percentage attempts. That defensive discipline paired with offensive execution highlighted Furman’s preparation and intensity in its third league win of the season.

What It Means for Furman

This win reinforces Furman’s upward trajectory in Southern Conference play. After erasing a double-digit halftime deficit to stun reigning SoCon champion UNC Greensboro earlier in the week, the Paladins followed with one of the most complete outings of the season against Western Carolina, showcasing both offensive depth and defensive cohesion.

The Paladins will look to carry this momentum forward as league play tightens, with confidence growing around Furman’s ability to impose its style on both ends of the floor. Furman’s next challenge comes as it seeks to build on back-to-back wins and maintain its position in the SoCon standings.
