Deacs Luck Runs Out Against Miami

The Deacs fell in yet another close game against the Miami Hurricanes by a score of 81-77 on Wednesday night. This was a game that Wake Forest controlled for the most of the duration, but the Demon Deacons collapsed down the stretch. The Deacs held a 70-65 lead with just under 5 minutes remaining, but were unable to hold that lead.

Inconsistency

It is an absolutely massive accomplishment for Cooper Schweiger to reach 1,000 points. It is also not good that he only had 2 points in this game. Tre’Von Spillers, normally a major contributor, had 4 points on only 1-6 shooting. These kinds of performances from starting players when you only run an 8 man rotation is a losing recipe every time. While Spillers stuffed the box score elsewhere, the lack of scoring killed the Deacs against Miami.

Omaha Biliew, normally a strong contributor off the bench, went scoreless on 3 attempts. Despite the tough performance from Biliew, Akins and Mason both had very nice games off the bench. The most consistent players on offense remain Juke Harris, Myles Colvin, and Nate Calmese. While that’s an incredibly solid big 3, it won’t be enough on its own in a league as deep as the ACC.

Juke Harris for MVP

Despite the inconsistency, multiple players continue turning in remarkable performances. Juke Harris had another vintage Juke Harris performance. Harris had 28 points on 9-15 shooting, 4-8 from three, and 6-10 from the line. Harris also added. 2 rebounds, an assist, 3 steals, and a block. At this point, its pretty egregious that Harris is not in discussion for the Wooden Award, much less ACC POTY.

Team Play

Harris was not the only player with a strong performance. Nate Calmese had 19 points on 8-13 from the field, including 3-4 from three. While Calmese added 2 rebounds, 4 assists, and a block, he also had 7 of the Deacs 12 turnovers. Myles Colvin had 13 points on 5-8 shooting as well as 3-4 from three. He also had 3 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals. The bench combined for 11 points on 4-10 shooting, 1-5 from three, and 2-2 from the line. The bench also provided 3 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 steals, and 2 blocks. This is one of the better bench performances so far this season.

Tobacco Road Cup

The Deacs fall to 10-6 on the season and 1-2 in ACC play. Up next, the Wake Forest Demon Deacons travel to Chapel Hill to take on the Tar Heels, currently ranked #17 in the country. The Deacs got off to a rough start in this years Tobacco Road Cup, falling to the bottom of the standings after a loss to NC State. The game between the Deacs and the Tar Heels will mark only the second game this season in the Tobacco Road Cup. Its always a difficult night in the Smith Center, so this will be another great early test for Coach Forbes and the team. Tip off is at 6pm EST on the ACC Network.
