Deacs Get 1st ACC Win

The Deacs survived the Hokies Saturday thanks to some late heroics from Nate Calmese as Wake Forest won 81-78 over the Virginia Tech Hokies. The Demon Deacons jumped out to an early lead in the 1st half but the Hokies would not go quietly. With the game tied at 78 with under a minute to go, Calmese buried a 3 from the top of the key to put this one on ice.

As a team, Wake Forest shot 44% from the field, 29% from three, and 87% from the free throw line. The Hokies actually outshot the Deacs from the floor. Virginia Tech shot 47% from the field, 33% from three, and 72% from the line. Turnovers made the difference in this game. The Demon Deacons forced 19 turnovers today, which they converted into 19 points. Wake also had 40 points in the paint and outrebounded the Hokies 34-33.

After today’s win, the Deacs move to 10-5 overall and 1-1 in ACC play. Up next, Wake Forest welcomes Miami to the Vet on Wednesday the 7th at 7pm EST on ESPNU. The Hurricanes are 12-2 on the year, and have won 7 straight. Lately, the Deacs have a bad habit of playing down to competition.
