WCU Football Beats UTC Thanks to Big Day from Dickens
The WCU football team held on to beat the UTC Mocs by a score of 35-28 in Chattanooga on Saturday. Taron Dickens had yet another stellar day, going 18/29 passing for 225 yards and 4 TDs with no interceptions. Wide receiver James Tyre had a monster day for the Catamounts, hauling in 5 receptions for 45 yards and 3 TDs, leading the way for Western in both categories.
The Catamounts backfield combined for 131 yards rushing on 34 carries, with Markel Townsend getting the lone rushing TD on the day. The Mocs actually outgained Western by about 50 yards, but 2 interceptions from Camden Orth forced by the WCU defense turned the tide of the game. This included a game-sealing interception, once again in the redzone, by the WCU defense.

The Western defense once again gave up some big plays and a good chunk of yards, but won the turnover battle yet again. Its actually quite remarkable how consistent this team has been all year. The keys to success in each game are essentially the same every week, and every week the Catamounts are able to execute those keys to the game and convert them into wins and success.
The defense continues to steal possessions every week. Taron Dickens continues to look like the best quarterback in college football, and the WCU offense is quite possibly the best in the country, at any level. To put that into perspective, the 35 points against UTC yesterday are the 2nd least points in an FCS game ON THE YEAR for WCU’s high-powered offense.
All eyes are on Cullowhee this week for WCU homecoming as the SoCon-leading Mercer Bears come to town for what many expect to be the de facto SoCon championship game this season. If Western is able to win this game, they will be in the drivers seat for their first ever SoCon title. The stakes are incredibly high, with a playoff spot up for grabs. See you at the Whit at 230pm EST on Saturday on ESPN+.
