Grand Canyon University (GCU) is stepping into uncharted territory as it makes its debut in the Mountain West Conference (MWC). After years of dominating the Western Athletic Conference, the Lopes now face stiffer competition, larger arenas, and high-stakes matchups. Fans are asking: can this roster compete at the top immediately, or is this season a stepping stone for the future?

A Mix of Experience and Emerging Talent for GCU

The 2025–26 Lopes blend experience with youthful energy. Leading the backcourt is junior guard Makaih Williams, a floor general known for defensive intensity and leadership. Williams sets the tone for a team adjusting to a tougher schedule. Beside him, graduate transfer Brian Moore Jr. brings scoring ability, versatility, and poise under pressure. Together, they form a dependable backcourt ready for Mountain West challenges.

GCU Frontcourt Firepower

On the wings and in the paint, Nana Owusu-Anane, a 6’8” graduate transfer from Brown University, provides athleticism and scoring versatility. Dusty Stromer, a junior forward, adds depth, shooting, and floor-spacing to complement Owusu-Anane. Anchoring the paint is freshman center Efe Demirel, a 7’1” Turkish import whose shot-blocking and rebounding could transform games. If Demirel adapts quickly, he could become the team’s defensive cornerstone.

Projected Starting Five for GCU

  • Makaih Williams (G) – Leadership, defense, playmaking
  • Brian Moore Jr. (G) – Scoring, experience, versatility
  • Dusty Stromer (F) – Shooting, depth, floor spacing
  • Nana Owusu-Anane (F) – Scoring, defense, versatility
  • Efe Demirel (C) – Shot-blocking, rebounding, interior presence

This lineup balances size, skill, and experience. Beyond the starters, bench contributions and breakout performances will be critical in tight Mountain West contests.

Key Matchups to Watch

GCU’s early schedule will reveal if the team is ready for the MWC grind:

  • Road opener at Wyoming – A measuring stick for readiness
  • Home vs. Colorado State – Early chance to stake a claim
  • San Diego State (road) – Always a tough test
  • Late-season trip to Nevada – Crucial for tournament seeding
  • Home vs. Utah State – Can GCU handle one of the league’s top defenses?

Each game will test talent, chemistry, resilience, and execution.

Breakout Stars

Several players could define the Lopes’ season:

  • Efe Demirel – Potential game-changer in rebounding and shot-blocking
  • Nana Owusu-Anane – Versatile scoring and defensive presence
  • Dusty Stromer – Stretching the floor, contributing on both ends
  • Williams & Moore Jr – Steady leadership and scoring in the backcourt

If these players step up, GCU could make an immediate impact and show it belongs in the Mountain West’s upper tier.

Season Outlook

Under Head Coach Bryce Drew, the Lopes are disciplined, defensively focused, and adaptable. Drew’s ability to develop talent and adjust strategies will be key as GCU faces a tougher schedule. While calling the Lopes favorites would be ambitious, optimism is warranted. With size, athleticism, and experienced guards, GCU has the tools to compete. Strong contributions from starters and bench players could propel the Lopes deep into the MWC tournament.

Projected Record & MWC Finish

A realistic projection puts GCU in the middle of the Mountain West pack. Early wins against teams like Wyoming or San Jose State could boost confidence, but road games against San Diego State and Nevada will be challenging. If Demirel and Owusu-Anane perform at a high level, the Lopes could finish 8–10 in conference play, landing around 6th–7th place. With that being said, I can see the Lopes finishing as high as 3rd with a 11-7 conference record as well. Either way, that positioning sets them up for a competitive MWC tournament and signals that GCU can hold its own in a stronger, deeper league.

Final Thoughts

This season marks a defining moment for GCU men’s basketball. The Lopes’ desert ascent into the Mountain West won’t be easy, but with talent, coaching, and ambition, they have the tools to rise quickly. Fans can expect thrilling matchups, breakout stars, and a team ready to prove that their first year in a new conference is just the beginning of something bigger.
