SPARTANBURG, S.C. — For three quarters, it felt like the night Wofford would finally break through. The Terriers landed haymakers on offense, scored in the kicking game, and had the crowd on edge after a late 83-yard touchdown.

But with the game in their grasp, Western Carolina snatched it away. Taron Dickens carved up the Terriers all evening and set up Marcus Trout’s 34-yard field goal with 23 seconds left, giving the Catamounts a stunning 23-21 comeback victory Saturday at Gibbs Stadium.

Wofford dropped to 0-5 overall, 0-2 in the Southern Conference, with yet another defeat coming by one score. Western Carolina improved to 2-3 and 2-0 SoCon, escaping Spartanburg unbeaten in league play.

Dickens Dazzles in Record Fashion

Dickens delivered a performance fans will remember, completing 53 of 56 passes for 378 yards and three touchdowns. His accuracy bordered on flawless, and he found James Tyre for all three scores.

Whenever Wofford swung momentum its way, Dickens answered with a back-breaking drive. By the final whistle, he had turned what looked like Wofford’s breakthrough into another gut punch.

Jackson-Anderson Sparks a Fast Start

The Terriers didn’t flinch early. Jayden Whitaker dropped a strike to Elijiah Jackson-Anderson, and the running back did the rest, racing into the end zone. Watson kept the offense out for a two-point try, and Wofford converted to seize an 8-0 lead — its most confident start of the season.

Scott’s Return Sends Shockwaves

Western Carolina struck back with two Dickens-to-Tyre touchdowns, but Wofford refused to fold. In the second quarter, Isaiah Scott caught a punt, weaved through traffic, and sprinted into the end zone, flipping the scoreboard to 15-14 Terriers.

The return was electric — the type of big play that jolted Gibbs Stadium and carried Wofford into halftime brimming with belief.

Aikens’ Bomb Brings the Crowd Alive

The Catamounts punched again out of the break, with Dickens finding Tyre a third time for a 20-15 lead. But Wofford delivered its loudest answer yet.

Late in the fourth quarter, Whitaker launched a deep ball that found Ivory Aikens in stride for an 83-yard touchdown. Aikens’ dash to the end zone gave Wofford a 21-20 lead, and the home crowd erupted, convinced the first win of the season was finally within reach.

Trout’s Kick Silences the Stadium

But Dickens wasn’t done. With the clock ticking, he steered Western Carolina into range for Trout, who calmly drilled the 34-yard game-winner. Just like that, the Terriers’ lead — and their chance at a season-changing win — vanished.

Another One That Got Away

Whitaker finished with 209 yards and two touchdowns, while Jackson-Anderson, Scott, and Aikens each delivered highlight-reel moments. But Wofford was outgained 463-241 and never produced the defensive stop that could have sealed the win.

It was the Terriers’ third one-score loss of the year, another chapter in a season of near-misses. Western Carolina, on the other hand, leaves Spartanburg unbeaten in the SoCon and with a quarterback putting together one of the best stretches in program history.

For Wofford, Saturday showed heart, explosiveness, and improvement. But the scoreboard told the same painful story: another game slipped away in the final minutes.
