The No. 7 Wake Forest field hockey team used a stifling defensive effort and a brace by sophomore Sarah Mudd to take down No. 18 Louisville, 2-0, on Friday night at Trager Stadium.

With the win, Wake Forest (8-2, 4-0 ACC) holds its longest winning streak since 2011 and its first 4-0 start to ACC play since 2005. Over the eight-game streak, the Demon Deacons are outshooting opponents 177 to 65, matching the Cardinals (5-5, 0-2 ACC) with five shots and three on goal this evening. With Mudd’s penalty corner goal in the fourth quarter, the attack penalty corner group for Wake Forest has scored at least once in every contest over the win streak and has now scored 15 of the Demon Deacons 33 goals.

Off a fantastic individual effort and assist from junior midfielder Faye Janse, Mudd scored the first goal of the game. It marked Mudd’s third tally of the season, all coming in the last five games. It was Janse’s second assist of the season and sixth point overall. With the first penalty corner for either team coming with 3:47 left in the game, Wake Forest made the most of the opportunity as Lena Keller found Mudd at the back post for her second goal of the game. Back-to-back ACC Defensive Player of the Week Ellie Todd was lights out in the cage again for Wake Forest, totaling three saves. With 22 saves across the last three matches, Todd has raised her season total to 35 saves, ranking second in the league.

“That was a hard-fought win. I’m extremely proud of the players being able to fly into Louisville, play a very talented Louisville team, and come away with a victory. We knew that our opportunities were going to be limited so I’m really proud of our team in converting the two opportunities that we did. It’s a challenge every night in this league and we have so much respect for the opponent each time we play. We’re continuing to learn how to win and how to play. We’re excited to be back home on Sunday and enjoy the next few weeks on our own turf.” – Head Coach Jen Averill
