No. 20 Wake Forest field hockey (5-2, 1-0 ACC) earned a dramatic 2-1 overtime victory at No. 4 Syracuse (6-1, 0-1 ACC) on Friday evening at J.S. Coyne Stadium.

After falling behind early in the second half, the Demon Deacons battled back with a fourth-quarter equalizer from junior Mia Schoenbeck, before sophomore Lauren Storey scored the golden goal in the 64th minute. With their goals, Schoenbeck and Storey continue to pace the Deacs’ attack, matching each other at eight apiece through the opening seven games. Sophomore Mia Montag collected her sixth and seventh assists of the year to move her into second among ACC student-athletes.

The Deacs controlled much of the match, outshooting the Orange 15-6 and holding a 9-3 advantage in penalty corners. Coming into the match, Syracuse was averaging 16.8 shots per game, as the Wake backline held the Orange to its second-lowest total of the season. Goalkeeper Ellie Todd anchored the defense with four saves, while Schoenbeck added a crucial defensive stop to go along with her goal.

Quotables
“It wasn’t our prettiest game. There were moments where I thought we controlled the tempo and built it and played well. But for some reason we just weren’t connecting with our out letting today, so we’re going to have a look at that. Having said that, with this group, they kind of understand the pulse and the vibe and they know what needs to be done. So, before we can enact that, they’re already initiating that. I thought Mia Montag was absolutely brilliant today and showed her leadership on the pitch and wasn’t afraid to attack the way that we were asking her to attack and created a tremendous amount of opportunity for us. And then, Mia Schoenbeck, evening the game up was absolutely critical. Lauren Storey, I think it’s great for her because she’s in a pressure situation and she rips the cover off the ball. I’m pretty confident with our overtime group. I just didn’t know how much legs we had left.” – Head Coach Jen Averill
