Family Connection
Frank Beamer is remembered as the legendary coach who turned Virginia Tech into a national contender. His son, Shane, now leads South Carolina and carries his own ties to Blacksburg.
This week in Atlanta, Shane will coach against his father’s former program in what can be called the “Beamer Bowl.” Frank’s influence remains a part of Hokie football, but it will be Shane’s Gamecocks trying to claim an opening win.

Quarterback Spotlight
South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers has been a focal point of offseason discussion, with some touting him as a dark-horse Heisman candidate. Saturday’s opener gives him a chance to show control of the offense under new coordinator Mike Shula.
Early games often include mistakes. Ball security, decision-making and composure will be critical for Sellers in his first full season as starter.
Virginia Tech counters with Kyron Drones, who flashed playmaking ability last season. If Drones has developed, the Gamecocks’ defense must stay disciplined and maintain gap integrity.
Offensive Weapons
Sellers will have more options at receiver, with Mazeo Bennett and Nyck Harbor expected to take on larger roles. Running back Rashul Faison was recently cleared by the NCAA and joins a committee that includes transfers and underclassmen.
The offensive line remains a question. Can it protect Sellers and open lanes for the backs? Experience and youth will both be tested in the opener.
Virginia Tech features a physical rushing attack with Marcellous Hawkins and Terion Stewart, both over 220 pounds. Tall receivers and versatile tight ends give Drones multiple targets if the line can hold up.
Defensive Questions
Both defenses underwent change in the offseason. South Carolina lost several starters to the NFL, while Virginia Tech added transfers and a new coordinator.
Avoiding explosive plays may determine the outcome. Can either defense generate consistent pressure? Which unit forces turnovers?
The Hokies have played 12 one-possession games over the past two seasons, losing eight. Their ability to finish late could again prove decisive.
Special Teams Edge
Special teams have long defined both programs. “Beamer Ball” remains a theme, and Shane Beamer’s roster features several new specialists who may be thrust into critical situations.
Special teams plays often shift momentum in Week 1 games. A blocked kick, long return or key mistake could decide this matchup.

Prediction
The opener sets up as a close, physical contest with both teams adjusting to new personnel. Sellers and Drones will draw attention, but the outcome may hinge on turnovers, line play and special teams.
College football rarely follows the script. If pressed, the pick here is South Carolina by a field goal. Expect a competitive game that lives up to the “Beamer Bowl” label.
