SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Wofford women’s soccer opened its 2025 season at Snyder Field on Thursday night, falling 1-0 to USC Upstate after an early own goal in the first half. The loss marked the fourth consecutive year the Terriers have begun the regular season at home.
The deciding moment came in the 19th minute when Spartans freshman defender Gwen McAllister sent a cross into the box. The ball deflected off a Wofford defender and looped over goalkeeper Elizabeth Navola for the game’s only goal. Despite matching USC Upstate with six shots, the Terriers could not find the back of the net.
Wofford’s best early chance came in the seventh minute, when forward Ines Obradovac fired a shot over the crossbar. Midfielders Ellie Gower and Charlotte Simas worked to create attacking opportunities, forcing the USC Upstate defense to clear multiple dangerous balls.
Navola kept the Terriers within reach, making three saves and organizing the back line through several second-half attacks. The Spartans placed four shots on goal, while Wofford finished without one. USC Upstate goalkeeper Marley Gerber earned the clean sheet without recording a save.
Wofford women’s soccer pushed forward in the final minutes, sending extra numbers into the attack in search of an equalizer. The Terriers’ pressure resulted in late possession in the attacking third but no breakthrough.
The Terriers will look to bounce back when they host UNC Asheville on Aug. 18 at Snyder Field. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m., and fans are encouraged to pack the stands to help Wofford women’s soccer secure its first win of the season.
