Zebulon, NC- The Carolina Mudcats (34-20) played host to the Charleston RiverDogs (28-28) in a Saturday evening contest. The Mudcats entered tonight’s contest 2.0 games ahead of the Lynchburg Hillcats (34-22) in the North Division standing. The Mudcats sent Chandler Welch (0-1) to the mound who entered tonight’s game with a 4.15 ERA in 13 innings pitched. The RiverDogs sent Jose Urbina (3-1) to the mound who entered tonight’s game with a 2.84 ERA in 38 innings pitched. The Carolina Mudcats entered tonight on a 3 game losing streak against the Charleston RiverDogs.
The Mudcats struck in the bottom of the first when Braylon Payne hit a solo home run to right field which gave the Mudcats a 1-0 lead. Charleston responded in the top of the second when Narciso Polanco scored on an error by Chandler Welch which tied the game at 1-1. Charleston struck again in the top of the third when Angel Mateo scored on a double to right field by Narciso Polanco which gave Charleston a 2-1 lead. Charleston struck in the top of the fourth when Jose Perez scored on a ground out to third base by Angel Mateo which increased the Charleston lead to 3-1. Charleston struck again in the top of the fifth when Wooyeoul Shin scored on a fielders choice by Yirer Garcia which expanded the Charleston lead to 5-1.
Jose Urbina threw 5 innings where he only allowed 1 run on 2 hits.
Charleston struck in the top of the seventh when Wooyeoul Shin scored on a ground out to second by Ricardo Gonzalez which expanded the Charleston lead to 5-1. Edgardo Ordonez scored on a sacrifice fly to center field by Luis Pena which cut the deficit to 5-2. Charleston slammed the door in the bottom of the ninth which secured the 5-2 win.
Seth Chavez threw 1 scoreless inning where he only allowed 1 walk. Jack Seppings threw 1 scoreless inning where he only allowed 1 hit. Cade Citelli threw 1.2 scoreless innings where he allowed no walks and no hits.
The winning pitcher for the RiverDogs was Jose Urbina for his 5 innings of 1 run ball. The losing pitcher for the Mudcats was Chandler Welch who threw 3.1 innings where he allowed 3 runs on 2 hits and 7 walks. The save went to Cole Citelli for his 1.2 scoreless innings. The Mudcats fell to 34-20 on the season while Charleston improved to 28-28 on the season. The Mudcats exited tonight 1 game ahead of the Lynchburg Hillcats in the North Division standings. The Mudcats are back in action Sunday afternoon at 1 pm at Five County Stadium.
Manager Stanley met with the media following the conclusion of the game. When asked about the reasons for the high OBP of the bottom of the lineup, Manager Stanley said:
“Just a good approach, guys really locking in on the strike zone and not giving away at bats, and they’ve done really well.”
