Zebulon, NC- The Carolina Mudcats (9-2) played host to the Delmarva Shorebirds (4-7) in a Wednesday evening contest. The Mudcats entered today’s contest 4.0 games ahead of the Fredericksburg Nationals (5-6) and Fayetteville Woodpeckers (6-5) in the North Division standing. The Mudcats sent Wande Torres (0-0) to the mound who entered today’s game with a 0.00 ERA in 2 innings pitched. The Shorebirds sent Michael Caldon (0-0) to the mound who entered today’s game with a 0.00 ERA in 1 inning pitched. The Carolina Mudcats entered today’s game with the best record in the MiLB at 9-1.
The Shorebirds struck in the top of the first when Braylin Tavera hit a 2 run home run to left field which gave Delmarva a 2-0 lead. The Mudcats responded in the bottom of the second when Braylon Payne stole home on a double steal which cut the deficit to 2-1. The Mudcats tied the game at 2-2 later in the inning when Blayberg Diaz scored on a triple to right center field by Luiyin Alastre. The Shorebirds struck again in the top of the 4th with a solo home run to left field by Yasmil Bucce which gave them a 3-2 lead. The Shorebirds scored again later in the inning when Alfredo Velasquez scored on an infield single off of the 3rd base bag by Edrei Campos which increased the Delmarva lead to 4-2.
Delmarva struck again in the top of the 7th when 2 runners scored on a single to center by Yasmil Bucce and an error by Braylon Payne which increased the Delmarva lead to 6-2. The Mudcats cut the lead to 6-3 in the bottom of the 8th when Jesus Made scored on a sac fly to center by Josh Adamczewski. The Mudcats only had one hit in the bottom of the ninth as they fell to the Shorebirds 6-3.
Cohen Achen threw 6 innings where he only allowed 1 run on 2 hits
The Shorebirds rise to 4-7 on the season while the Mudcats fall to 9-2 on the 2025 campaign. The Mudcats lead in the Carolina League North Division diminished to 3.0 games ahead of the Woodpeckers. The winning pitcher for the Shorebirds was Cohen Achen (2-0) for his 6 innings of 1 run ball. The losing pitcher for the Mudcats was Jesus Flores (0-1) for his 3.1 innings pitched where he allowed 2 runs on 7 hits. The Mudcats return to action Thursday night at 6:30 pm at Five County Stadium.
