Somehow, we are already at Week 9 in our NFL Sunday Night Preview Series. This week, the Indianapolis Colts will travel to Minnesota to face the Vikings. The Vikings seem to be the easy choice, but there’s more than meets the eye.

The Colts enter this one at 4-4 and have seen a dip in scoring as of late, as it has been 4 weeks since they last surpassed 20 points. The biggest storyline out of Indianapolis at the moment revolves around the QB room. After an injury-riddled rookie season, former fourth overall pick Anthony Richardson was named the starter after recovering from surgery for this season. After exiting in Week 4, he would go on to miss the next two games. The Colts would give him another shot, but the team averages almost 10 more points per game when starting Flacco. As if his 44.4% completion percentage combined with 10 fewer points per game weren’t enough, the final straw seemed to be when he took a play off in Week 8 against the Texans, stating that he “needed a breather.” Despite allowing an average of 379.6 yards per game, their defense has kept the scoring against them to an average of 21.5 points. If Flacco can continue at a similar pace, the Colts have a shot at a good record. Does this mean Richardson is a bust? It’s too early to tell, but it’s not looking great.

The Vikings come in at 5-2, after starting with five straight wins, they have lost the last two. Vikings fans shouldn’t feel too bad about this; they have had a fairly tough schedule and lost to two good teams. The Vikings have remained fairly steady on both sides of the ball, averaging just under 27 points per game while allowing only 19.6 on average. They will look to bounce back after a season-low 20 points against the Rams in Week 8.

While the -3.5 on the Vikings certainly makes sense, this is a tricky game to be confident in betting on. Technically speaking, Flacco averages more points per start this season than the Vikings. The defenses are also separated by less than two points allowed per game on average. The Vikings’ defense is also averaged out pretty well by their amazing run defense, as their pass defense ranks 30th in the league. Joe Flacco is certainly more of a downfield guy than Richardson, so this game could be trickier than meets the eye.
