Raleigh, NC-Fresh off a trip to the 2023 Final Four, the NC State women’s basketball team (0-0) returned to the court on Tuesday playing host to the visiting Anderson Trojans (0-0, 0-0) in an exciting exhibition to begin their season. The Wolfpack are looking to return to the NCAA tournament and earn another deep run. Wes Moore is entering his 12th season at the helm and returns 2 of the most prolific guards in the women’s college game in Saniya Rivers and Aziaha James. Rivers was recently named to the Ann Meyers-Drysdale shooting guard watch list for the pre-season.
1st Quarter- NC State 26-Anderson 10
After getting off to a slow start, the Wolfpack went on a 15-0 run in the middle of the quarter to take a 20-6 lead. Nc State was led by Freshman Devyn Quigley with 7 points on 2-4 shooting. Rivers was next with 5 points of her own and 2 rebounds. Rivers and Quigley consistently were able to get where they wanted in the paint and carved up the Trojan Defense throughout the quarter.
Defensively, the Wolfpack were stingy on that end of the floor. The Pack forced the Trojans into 6 turnovers and held the Trojans to just 20% shooting. Rebounding was also in favor of the Wolfpack as they held a 17-5 advantage on the glass. The Wolfpack demonstrated why they were picked preseason #2 in the ACC and earned a preseason top 25 ranking.
2nd Quarter- NC State 48 Anderson 27
The Wolfpack continued to stay hot in the 2nd quarter as they finished the quarter shooting a blistering 53.5% from the field on their way to a 21-point first half lead. Freshman Zemareya Jones led the way for NC State as she netted 11 points on 3-4 shooting including 1-2 from three-point land. Lizzie Williamson had a strong quarter as she finished with 8 points and 3 rebounds. Jones also led the team in rebounding with 6 boards as well.
The Wolfpack also continued to own the boards as well with a 29-16 lead on the glass heading into the half. NC State continued to play strong in the paint to get 20 of their 48 points inside the lane. The Trojans tried to keep the game close from the 3-point line. They Trojans however would finish the half 2-19 from beyond the arc and could not pull closer despite the concerted effort from the outside.
3rd Quarter- NC State 71 Anderson 42
The Wolfpack came out of the locker room with more ownership of the glass as they proved to be more physical in the paint. NC State used 14 bench points and 16 points in the paint to extend the lead for the 3rd straight quarter. The Wolfpack also used 4 offensive rebounds to add another 5 second chance points to continue to win the battle on the interior. The interior proved to be the difference in the game as the Wolfpack were just too strong on the inside for the visiting Trojans.
NC State would finish the quarter 6-20 from the outside good for 30% to end the third quarter. The Wolfpack also proved to be a force on the defensive end as well. 14 forced turnovers led to 14 points off as the Wolfpack defense continued to swarm the Trojans.
4th Quarter NC State 91 Anderson 54
The 4th Quarter proved to be more of the same as NC State extended the lead to 38 midways through the 4th quarter with the score 82-46 at the official timeout Zamareya Jones led the Wolfpack in scoring with 19 points and 9 rebounds. Saniya Rivers also finished with a double double of 14 points, 10 Rebounds and chipped in 5 assists.
Next up for NC State is a November 5th matchup at 7PM at Reynolds Coliseum.
