A Dynasty is Born, NFL Edition
The NFL season has come to an end, and we have crowned the Super Bowl champion once again. It was a close game that included lead changes and overtime, let’s break down the excitement.
The first quarter opened up with a scare for the 49ers, in an early turnover via fumble. The usually sure-handed Christian McCaffrey fumbled on the first drive of the game, giving the Chiefs an excellent opportunity to get out in front early. However, the San Francisco 49ers defense held their ground, not allowing any points off the early turnover. After this, the first quarter was fairly uneventful, ending in a scoreless draw.

One of the better highlights of the second quarter came fairly early, as Trent McDuffie knocked away a certain 49er’s touchdown, forcing them to a field goal as the first score of the game. Kansas City still could not respond on the following drive, leaving the door open for San Francisco, who took advantage with a passing TD to make it 10-0. The Chiefs did get on the board before halftime, with a 28-yard field goal from Harrison Butker, leaving a 10-3 lead for the 49ers at half-time.

What is a Super Bowl without the half-time show? Usher highlighted this year’s event and brought out some of his high-profile friends, including Alicia Keys, Ludacris, Lil’ John, and more. They all performed very well live and while it may not be on the greatest half-time shows of all-time list, they did very well and put on an enjoyable show.

The second half opened up with more defensive prowess from both teams. Mahomes threw an early interception, but their defense was equally up to the task, not allowing any points on the turnover. The Chiefs put on a mini surge near the end of the quarter, scoring twice in a row with a field goal followed by a touchdown. With 2:28 left in the 3rd the Chiefs went up 13-10 going into the fourth.

Things really started getting interesting in the fourth quarter. Jauan Jennings caught a 10-yard pass for a TD near the middle of the quarter, only to have the PAT blocked, leaving the score 16-13 in favor of the 49ers. This missed extra point turned out huge, as the Chiefs tie the game with a field goal with 5:46 left in regulation time. Tensions mounted as both teams traded field goals within the 2-minute warning, sending the Super Bowl into overtime.

The 49ers won the toss in the extra frame and elected to get the ball first. This decision did raise some eyebrows with the new postseason overtime rules, as some said they would rather have the ball and be able to know what to do on 4th down (if you were unaware, new overtime rules for the postseason state that even if the opening drive results in a touchdown, the other team will get a chance). This would not come into play however, as the 49ers marched down the field and scored a field-goal. Patrick Mahomes took this opportunity to cement the Kansas City Chiefs as a Dynasty, leading his team down the field and passing the Super Bowl winning touchdown to Mecole Hardman Jr.

There you have it, another season of the NFL in the books, wrapped up with another championship for the Kansas City Chiefs. Their defense combined with Patrick Mahomes ability to spread the ball around to the resources he has are the main reasons for the victory in my opinion (the blocked FG might have been the key point to the game).
