Rail Rivalry back in Johnson City, Tenn. for the 49th Matchup
First Quarter for The Bucs
A defensive battle quickly turned into an exchange of big plays in the first quarter. Following a quick three-and-out by The Bucs, UTC manufactured a drive that culminated in a successful 47-yard field goal.
Down 3-0, the Buccaneers responded with immediate fireworks. Mason Mims opened the drive by connecting with Brandon Winton for a massive 39-yard gain down to the UTC 36. Jason Albritton took over from there, grinding out 16 rushing yards to find the end zone and give ETSU a 7-3 advantage. After the Bucs’ defense forced a UTC punt with 3:11 left in the quarter, the offense control-milked the clock into the second period before ultimately punting the ball back to the Mocs.

Second 15:00 of the Matchup;
Defense and special teams took center stage in the second quarter. A crucial third-down stop by ETSU’s Jarvis Johnson lost Chattanooga five yards, though a massive 62-yard punt pinned the Bucs at their own 19. When Mims was sacked on the ensuing drive, ETSU punter Nate Brackett came to the rescue, blasting a breathtaking 74-yard punt to trap the Mocs at their own 4-yard line.
The field position battle swung heavily in ETSU’s favor when a short UTC punt set the Bucs up at the opponent’s 49. Mason Mims quickly went to work, executing a 28-yard pass to Jaiden Daniels before Daniels rushed down to the UTC 3. Disappointment followed, however; an apparent touchdown pass to Trey Weary was ruled out of bounds. Unable to find an open receiver on the next two plays, the Buccaneers suffered a frustrating turnover on downs at the Mocs’ 2-yard line.
The remainder of the half was a chaotic mess of laundry and defensive pressure. Back-to-back sacks and flags pushed ETSU back to their own 35-yard line. Despite a 10-yard play from Charlie Browder, the Bucs had to punt it away. The Mocs took over with 1:06 remaining but ultimately couldn’t orchestrate a two-minute drill, keeping the score locked as the first half drew to a close.

Coming Back from Halftime;
Field position and execution errors dominated the early stages of the second half, beginning with an illegal procedure or re-kick that forced ETSU to kick off twice. What followed was a classic Southern Conference defensive stalemate. Both Mocs and Bucs’ coaching staffs saw their drives stall out repeatedly, resulting in an exchange of punts that kept the third-quarter scoreboard blank. The stalemate finally broke in terms of control during the closing minutes; the Buccaneers put together a sustained drive over the final 3:41, successfully carrying their offensive momentum over into the fourth quarter.
Final 15:00, Bucs End with a Statement;
ETSU delivered the definitive dagger early in the fourth frame. Capping off a masterful 90-yard drive, Mason Mims connected with TJ Peyton on a 20-yard touchdown pass to elevate the score to 14-3. Chattanooga was left with no answers, instantly going three-and-out. The Mocs did find a brief spark of life when Kristian Ozane intercepted Mims on the following possession, but the defense stood tall, forcing yet another Chattanooga punt.
Backed up to their own 9-yard line following a holding infraction, the Bucs turned to their ground game to put the contest away. Jason Albritton exploded for back-to-back runs totaling 42 yards, flipping the field entirely. Alongside Peyton, Albritton ground out tough yards to reach the UTC 23-yard line by the 4:16 mark, draining the Mocs of their remaining timeouts.

Securely running out the clock, ETSU secured bragging rights and custody of “The Rail”. The iconic 108-pound, 5-foot-7 railroad prize returns to Johnson City as the Bucs celebrate an emotional 14-3 triumph. Up next, ETSU takes its 2-0 SoCon record on the road to battle The Citadel next Saturday at 2:00 p.m..
