Final: Mercer 34, Abilene Christian 17

Abilene Christian entered September 26 riding the emotional high of the Idaho comeback. They left with a harsh reminder of how quickly a game can flip when turnovers pile up and a dual threat quarterback takes control. Mercer didn’t just win — they seized momentum, dictated the physicality, and buried ACU under a 27‑point avalanche that stretched from late in the second quarter through the final whistle.

A Promising Start for Abilene Christian

Abilene Christian' own Deonte Dean celebrating a touchdown

Abilene Christian opened the game with confidence and rhythm. After Mercer struck first on a Travion Solomon touchdown pass, the Wildcats responded with a pair of strong scoring drives. Deonte Dean punched in a 1‑yard touchdown, and Tucker Parks followed with a 13‑yard keeper that sent Wildcat Stadium into a surge of optimism.

At 14–7, ACU looked sharp. The run game was clicking, the tempo felt right, and the defense was flying around. Fans could feel the momentum building — the Wildcats looked like the better team.

But Mercer wasn’t rattled. And ACU didn’t yet know the game’s defining problem was about to emerge.

Pickles Changes Everything

JP Pickles run in game vs Georgia Tech. He was the star of the show in Mercer's stunning victory over Abilene Christian

Mercer quarterback JP Pickles became the story of the night. His stat line was the difference:

  • 77 passing yards and a touchdown
  • 130 rushing yards and two touchdowns

Pickles’ ability to escape pressure and turn broken plays into explosive gains repeatedly broke ACU’s contain. His 2‑yard touchdown run just before halftime tied the game at 17–17 and completely erased ACU’s early momentum.

From the stands, you could feel the shift. Mercer’s sideline grew louder. ACU’s defense looked a step slower. The Wildcats’ early confidence faded into concern.

Mercer’s Second‑Half Surge

The third quarter belonged entirely to the Bears.

Pickles opened the half with a 38‑yard touchdown strike to Brayden Smith, a perfectly placed ball that stunned the crowd. Mercer followed with a grinding, clock‑draining drive that ended in a field goal, stretching the lead to 27–17.

Then came the weather delay — more than an hour of waiting, cooling down, and trying to stay mentally locked in. When play resumed, ACU never regained rhythm.

Mercer’s run game, led by Devon Caldwell’s 132 yards, kept hammering ACU’s front. The Wildcats’ offense stalled, and turnovers began to pile up.

The Knockout Blow for Abilene Christian

With Abilene Christian still clinging to hope late in the fourth quarter, Pickles delivered the dagger: a 59‑yard touchdown run that broke through the left side and silenced the stadium.

It was the kind of play that defines a game — a quarterback refusing to be contained, a defense out of answers, and a road team closing with authority.

ACU finished with five turnovers (three Parks interceptions and two lost fumbles). Mercer finished with zero. That stat alone tells the story.

Final Numbers

Mercer

  • 279 rushing yards
  • 0 turnovers
  • 27 unanswered points

Abilene Christian

  • 192 rushing yards
  • 195 passing yards
  • 5 turnovers
  • No second‑half points

What This Game Means

ACU didn’t lose because of effort — they lost because Mercer controlled the line of scrimmage, protected the football, and unleashed a quarterback who repeatedly punished broken contain. The Wildcats showed flashes, especially early, but the second half exposed issues that must be corrected quickly.

Mercer walked out with a statement win. ACU walked out with film that will sting — and a clear picture of what must improve before West Florida arrives next week.
