LAWRENCEVILLE, Georgia – The Gwinnett Stripers (18-16, 56-52) scored four runs in the second inning and held serve the rest of the way to defeat the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (12-21, 54-53) 5-2 on Tuesday night at Gwinnett Field. The Stripers lead the series 1-0.

Decisive Plays: Sandy Leon got the scoring started in the second inning with an RBI single to score Carlos Santana and give Gwinnett a 1-0 lead. One batter later, Cal Conley stroked an RBI double into right field for a 2-0 lead. Patrick Clohisy capped off the big inning with a two-run single to double the lead to 4-0. Jacksonville got on the board with two in the sixth to cut the lead in half. In the bottom of the eighth inning, the Stripers added insurance courtesy of Leon’s second RBI knock of the night. With a 5-2 lead in the ninth, Ian Hamilton (S, 6) earned the save and slammed the door shut with the tying run at the plate.

Key Contributors: Leon (2-for-4, 2 RBIs) and Clohisy (2-for-3, 2 RBIs) combined to drive in four of Gwinnett’s five runs. Starter AJ Smith-Shawver (W, 2-0) tossed 5.2 innings (2 H, 2 ER, 4 BB, 6 SO) and earned the win. James Karinchak (H, 2), Hayden Harris (H, 6), and Hamilton combined on 3.1 scoreless, two-hit innings in relief. For Jacksonville, Kemp Alderman had the lone RBI.

Noteworthy: Leon notched his first multi-RBI game of the season. Clohisy tallied his 10th multi-hit effort in 19 career Triple-A games and is now slashing .431/.500/.708 since joining the Stripers.
