ATLANTA – Despite bringing the tying run 90 feet away in the ninth, the Wake Forest baseball team (28-15, 11-11 ACC) dropped the opening game of the series against No. 3 Georgia Tech (34-7, 17-5 ACC) by a final score of 6-5 on Friday evening at Russ Chandler Stadium.

Wake Forest launched home runs 24 and 25 over the last six games, continuing an unprecedented run for the Demon Deacons. On the season, Wake has left the yard at least twice 18 different times.

Junior Kade Lewis sent his fourth home run in the last five games out to right field to put the Demon Deacons on top in the top of the first. The Sartell, Minn., native has gone 12-for-18 (.667) with 13 RBIs and seven runs scored across the last five games.

Fellow junior Blake Schaaf sent a solo shot over the wall in right field in the second inning. Having yet to homer in his first 94 at-bats as a Demon Deacon, Schaaf has now sent four balls over the wall in his last 15 at-bats.

Additionally, at the plate, sophomore Dalton Wentz picked up his 14th multi-hit game of the year, with a pair of singles. The Madison Heights, Va., product has hit safely in six of the last seven games for Wake Forest.

Freshman Evan Jones added another solid appearance on the mound as he recorded three strikeouts while giving up one unearned run over a career-high matching 3.0 innings of relief. Meanwhile, senior left-hander Zach Johnston notched a pair of punchouts to keep it a one-run game heading into the ninth.

“That’s a game where we certainly had chances to win—too many free 90s. I think we had 10 free 90s on the day. I feel like they earned two of the six runs they got, obviously with the [Drew] Burress single followed by the [Jarren] Advincula home run. The other four runs they got, we didn’t catch a flyball that led to a run; we had some walks that led to runs. You just can’t afford to give up 10 free 90s against a really good offense. Offensively, we didn’t do quite enough. We had our leadoff hitter on in a couple of different innings and couldn’t move them around, including the last inning. We needed to do a better job when we got a leadoff hitter on and move them around. They did a good job, and they got their leadoff around there for their sixth run. We didn’t do the same on our side. I still like where we are in this series. We’ve got a lot of pitching left. We have [Blake] Morningstar, [Rhys] Bowie, [Marcelo] Harsch, [Will] Ray and [Ryan] Bosch, so we got a lot of good arms left. We got to come out tomorrow and play good baseball and get a good start out of Troy Dressler.” – Head Coach Tom Walter
