Heels Crush Gamecocks in Latest Battle for the Carolinas
The Diamond Heels and the South Carolina Gamecocks renewed their annual rivalry Tuesday night in Charlotte. This year’s matchup was a bit different, as South Carolina fired head coach Paul Mainieri just four days prior. Interim head coach Monte Lee led the Gamecocks against the Tar Heels, and will presumably finish out the season. The Gamecocks scored first, but the Heels quickly responded, and would take the win over their old rival 9-1. Walker Mcduffie and Connor Chicoli got the start for their respective teams.
How It Happened
The Gamecocks struck first on an RBI single in the 1st inning, but this would be their only score of the game. After this, it was all Tar Heels. Carolina responded with 2 runs in the 1st on a homerun from Gavin Gallaher that drove in Jake Schaffner. Owen Hull scored on a wild pitch in the 6th, and then the Tar Heels broke it open in the 7th. The Heels would drive in 6 more runs in the 7th and put this one out of reach of the Gamecocks. Walker Mcduffie got the win and moves to 5-1 on the season.
Moving Forward
The Diamond heels move to 21-4-1 on the season, with a 6-3 record in conference play. The Tar Heels now sit second in the ACC standings. Up next, the Diamond Heels head up to South Bend to take on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Notre Dame is 15-6 overall this season while also sporting a 6-3 record in ACC play. First pitch on Friday is at 4:30pm EST.
