Furman Edges Manhattan 15-12 in Lacrosse

Furman scored the final five goals Tuesday evening and picked up a 15-12 victory in its final non-conference game of the season over the Manhattan Jaspers in women’s lacrosse action at Paladin Stadium.

Furman improves to 4-5 on the season while Manhattan drops to 1-8 overall.

Lily Toole and reigning Big South Offensive Player of the Week Allie Kandel both led the Paladin offense with six points. Toole netted a team high five goals and dished out an assist while Kandel added two goals and a career high four assists. Lily Mosser matched her career high of three goals and finished with four ground balls and a caused turnover. Zoe Milmoe picked up six ground balls, tied for eighth-most in a game in program history, and Skylar Hilmer provided four ground balls and a career best three caused turnovers.

In goal, Sam Melville came off the bench to earn the win totaling six saves.

Maya Metz compiled five goals for the Jaspers and Julia Kerr contributed five points on three goals and two assists. Brooke Leonard posted three assists. Goalie Sophie Pasnak registered 12 saves, two ground balls, and one caused turnover.

Manhattan led for the entire contest until Toole’s fourth goal of the evening tied the score at 12-12 with 9:27 remaining in regulation. Furman outscored the Jaspers, 5-0, over the last 13:10 with Toole being one of four different players to score during that stretch. The Paladins’ final three goals from Toole, Reynolds Hester, and Shae Insinga came over a run of less than two minutes to seal the 15-12 victory.

Manhattan opened the game with four goals in less than four minutes before Toole put Furman on the board at the 11:15 mark of the first quarter. The Paladins got to within a two-goal deficit five times in the first half and trailed 9-7 at intermission capped by Kandel’s goal with 7:44 remaining.

The Jaspers held Furman without a goal for over 10 minutes in the third quarter and built an 11-7 lead when the Paladins posted three consecutive goals from Mosser and Toole to trail, 11-10, at the 14:19 mark of the fourth quarter.

Furman concluded the contest with a 37-29 advantage in shots and 26-12 in ground balls, and forced Manhattan into 16 turnovers, including six in the fourth quarter. The 26 ground balls are tied for ninth-most in a game in program history. The Paladins also compiled 10 caused turnovers.

Furman opens Big South Conference play next Wednesday, March 25, traveling to Clinton, S.C., for a 7 p.m. opening draw against Presbyterian.
