After a strong start on the mound from Kuhns, who retired the first 10 batters he faced, UT’s bats stuck first with two runs on three hits in the top of the third inning to open the scoring. Ford drove in his first two runs of the night with a one-out single to score Jay Abernathy and Garrett Wright, who had back-to-back hits to lead off the frame.

Following four scoreless innings to start the game, Georgia was finally able to get to Kuhns in the bottom of the fifth when second baseman Ryan Black broke up the shutout with a solo homer to center field, which was the first of five consecutive two-out hits for the Dawgs that resulted in a four-spot in the inning. Kuhns finished with six strikeouts in 4.2 innings and did not factor into the decision.

That would prove to be plenty of run support for lefty reliever Brandon Arvidson, who pitched the final 4.1 innings to earn his first win of the year. The Dripping Springs, Texas, native was phenomenal out of the bullpen, allowing just two hits while striking out four batters.

Justin Byrd struck out six but suffered the loss for UGA after giving up three runs on four hits in three innings of relief. Bulldogs’ starter Joey Volchko got a no-decision after allowing four runs on six hits and two walks over five innings.
UP NEXT: The Vols will look to take the series with a win on Saturday in Athens. First pitch for game two of the series is set for 5 p.m. on the SEC Network.
