ASHEVILLE, N.C. — March basketball has a certain sound to it — sneakers squeak a little louder, the crowd leans forward on every possession, and every mistake feels heavier than the last. Thursday night inside the Harrah’s Cherokee Center carried all that tension as the Furman Paladins women’s basketball faced the Mercer Bears women’s basketball in the quarterfinal round of the Southern Conference Tournament. For much of the first half, the game balanced on a knife’s edge. Each team traded pushes and answered quickly. Neither side created much separation, but both showed why March is always unpredictable.

However, the third quarter changed everything.

Behind clutch plays from Alyssa Ervin, steady leadership from Chantelle Stuart, and a momentum‑shifting defensive spark from Furman’s front line, the Paladins seized control. Furman tightened its defense, moved the ball with confidence, and gradually pulled away for a 66–45 victory. By the final minutes, what began as a tense postseason battle had turned into a commanding performance.

Mercer Sets the Early Tone

Early in the game, Mercer attacked with confidence and physicality, pushing the ball inside and forcing Furman to defend through contact. The Bears scored 12 first‑quarter points and maintained pressure through the middle of the half. However, Furman responded with patience, slowing the tempo and probing for higher‑percentage shots.

Eventually, guard Alyssa Ervin began to find space for the Paladins. Her ability to attack the basket and draw fouls helped Furman stay within reach. By halftime, Furman held an 18–17 edge.

Furman Finds Rhythm Before the Break

As the second quarter unfolded, Furman’s offense began to settle. The ball moved more freely, and the Paladins generated cleaner looks. Chantelle Stuart helped orchestrate the offense, using ball movement and court vision to keep Mercer off balance.

Midway through the period, Ervin knocked down a key jumper that nudged Furman ahead. Sweeping through the arc and drawing defensive attention, she helped lift the Paladins into a slim lead that they carried into halftime. Mercer continued to battle with inside attacks, but Furman’s improved spacing and execution gave them an advantage at the break.

Ervin Ignites the Second Half

To start the third quarter, Furman came out with greater intensity on both ends. The Paladins frustrated Mercer with tighter help defense and quicker rotations, prompting rushed shots and turnovers.

Alyssa Ervin led the charge offensively, hitting multiple key baskets and finishing strong inside. Over the night, she finished with 27 points, often attacking closeouts and converting in the paint. That scoring burst lifted Furman ahead while the momentum began to turn decisively in their favor.

In contrast, Mercer struggled to find consistent offense, managing only 10 third‑quarter points as Furman pushed the lead. The Paladins’ defense set the tone, disrupting Mercer’s rhythm and forcing tough shots.

Furman Slams the Door

In the fourth quarter, Furman’s defense tightened further. The Paladins limited Mercer to just six points in the final period, showing disciplined rotations and active hands that created turnovers and easy transition opportunities.

Meanwhile, Furman continued to execute on offense. Ervin stayed aggressive, and the rest of the team moved the ball with patience and precision. With each possession, the Paladins edged farther ahead until the final buzzer confirmed a 66–45 victory.

Key Performers

  • Alyssa Ervin, Furman: 27 points — led all scorers and set the tone with strong scoring from all levels.
  • Clare Coyle, Furman: Contributed on both ends with rebounds and interior defense.
  • Chantelle Stuart, Furman: Controlled the tempo and facilitated ball movement.
  • Leading Mercer performers were limited by Furman’s defense, but Mercer’s early physical play kept the Bears competitive early.
