Deacs Crush Syracuse Orange

The Deacs got back in the win column with a big 88-83 win over Syracuse on Saturday night at the LJVM Coliseum. Myles Colvin was absolutely red hot again tonight, leading both teams in scoring with 32 points. Donnie Freeman and Nate Kingz combined for 48 points for Syracuse, but it was not enough to overcome the Deacs strong team effort.

Myles Colvin

I always enjoy when I get to do one of these for someone other than just Juke Harris. It means the Deacs are not just a one man team. Myles Colvin had 32 points on 9-12 shooting and an absurd 7-8 from three. He also added 8 rebounds, 3 assists, and a block as well. As if that was not enough, Colvin also was a perfect 7-7 from the free throw line. This was the 2nd time in his career that Colvin has scored more than 30 points in a game.

As A Team

The Demon Deacons had one of their best shooting performances of the year as a team against the Syracuse Orange. As a team, the Deacs shot 58% percent from the field, 56% from three, and 87% from the line. of the 33 made field goals, 19 were assisted, good for 57% of all made baskets. The Deacs also won the rebounding battle 30-18. This was by far the most dominant performance the Demon Deacons have had on the boards in ACC play this season.

Myles Colvin wasn’t the only one with a big night for the Demon Deacons. Tre’Von Spillers had 16 points on a very efficient 8-12 shooting from the field. Spillers also had 3 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals, and 3 blocks. Juke Harris had 13 points on 4-15 shooting from the field, with 5 rebounds, 5 assists, and 2 steals.

Cooper Schweiger was once again a big impact off the bench. Schweiger had 11 points on a perfect 5-5 from the field and 1-1 from three. Schweiger also had 4 rebounds and 2 assists. Sebastian Akins had 10 points on 4-7 shooting, with 2 rebounds, 3 assists, a steal, and a block.

Moving Forward

It is truly difficult to understate how important it was for the Demon Deacons to win this game. This means the Deacs are now 15-14 overall and 6-10 in conference play. Not only does the win mean the Deacs once again have a winning record, but they now own sole possession of 13th place in the ACC standings. Most importantly, the Deacs are now one spot above the cut line to qualify for the ACC tournament. This is the Deacs only chance at making the tournament, per bracketology expert NKY aka Samson Sports.

Up next, Coach Forbes takes the Deacs on the road to face #11 Virginia in Charlottesville. The Cavaliers are coming off a rather embarrassing loss by 26 points to the Duke Blue Devils. Tipoff is at 7pm on the ACC Network. If the Demon Deacons can pull the upset, they will be all but guaranteed a spot in the ACC tournament.
