Diamond Heels Keep Piling Up Wins
The Diamond Heels continue to rack up wins early this season. Coach Forbes and co. are 8-1-1 through 10 games this season, with the lone blemishes coming against Omaha-minded ECU. The winning ways continued in the mid-week action this week as the Heels faced VCU and NC A&T at the Bosh. Carolina would outscore both teams by a combined score of 2-4 across just 16 innings of play.
Tuesday – NC A&T
The Tar Heels took on the Aggies of NC A&T on Tuesday afternoon for their now annual matchup at the Bosh. Caden Glauber would get the win for UNC as the Heels beat the Aggies 9-1. The Aggies scored their lone run in the top of the 9th on a single to shallow center field by Aggie’s 1B Tyler Smith.

Cameron Padgett got the start and pitched well thru 3 innings, but was pulled for Caden Glauber after walking two batters in the 4th, but still recorded 2 strikeouts. Glauber recorded 5 strikeouts and no walks across 5 scoreless innings for the Heels. Camron Seagraves came in to close this one out, allowing 1 hit and 1 run before closing it out in the 9th. Diamond Heels took the victory 9-1.
Wednesday – VCU
The VCU Rams were in town next on Wednesday after the Aggies to take on their fellow rams in the Diamond Heels. Erik Paulsen stayed hot to open the scoring with a solo shot to deep right field in the 1st for his third homerun of the season. Owen Hull would plate Macon Winslow on a short single to give the Tar Heels a 2-0 lead.
The Rams would respond with a run in the 3rd off an unearned run, but the Heels responded with 4 runs in the bottom of the 3rd to make it 6-1 and never looked back. VCU would score 2 runs in the 4th, but UNC would add 1 in the 6th and 3 more in the 7th to force the run-rule 13-3 victory over the Rams.
So Far
The Diamond Heels are currently sporting an 8-1-1 record and so far look to be as advertised in the preseason. The split series against ECU certainly showed a few things to be concerned about, but nothing to hit the panic button over this early in the season. We are only 10 games in, yet UNC has fielded 13 different pitchers, with each one recording at least one strikeout. So far, all but one UNC starting pitcher has an ERA under 4.0.
On the offensive side, the Tar Heels have 6 different players that have hit homeruns so far this season. Every single player that has seen at least 10 at-bats has recorded at least 1 hit. This year’s team won’t have the same kind of offensive firepower fans have become accustomed to in recent years, but the pitching should more than be able to make up the difference.
Moving Forward
Up next, the Diamond Heels take on the Le Moyne Dolphins out of the Northeast Conference (NEC) for a three game weekend series at the Bosh. The Dolphins are 0-6 on the road this season and are still looking for their first win overall. The Dolphins also have yet to play a single home game this season. Le Moyne is allowing 13 runs per game so far this season, so this should be a strong opportunity for the Diamond Heels to get the offense going the way they want to. First pitch is at 4pm Friday, 2pm Saturday, and 1pm Sunday, all broadcast on ACCNX.
