Deacs Blown Out by Hokies in Blacksburg
The Deacs saw their 3-game winning streak ended at the hands of a 82-63 victory by the Virginia Tech Hokies. Wake Forest held the lead until about 13 minutes until halftime and then didn’t come close for the rest of the game. Consistency continues to be an issue for the Demon Deacons. Virginia Tech is now 18-10, including 7-8 in conference play, good enough for 10th in the ACC standings. Juke Harris was the leading scorer today for the Deacs, while Tre’Von Spillers led the team in rebounds.
Deacs Inside The Numbers
Juke Harris led the way for The Deacs with 16 points on 7-17 shooting, 2-10 from three and 0-2 from the line. Harris also had 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and a steal. Tre’Von Spillers had 12 points on 5-10 shooting and 1-2 from three. Spillers also added 7 rebounds, an assist, and 2 blocks. Cooper Schweiger had 10 points on 4-6 from the field, 1-2 from three, and had 1 rebound. Mekhi Mason led the bench in scoring with 7 points on 3-8 from the field and 1-6 from three. Mason also had 4 rebounds and a steal
As A Team
The Deacs looked like the team we’ve seen for most of ACC play today. The offense stagnated due to the sheer number of missed threes the Demon Deacons were forced to take due to the deficit in the 2nd half. Wake Forest managed to shoot below every ACC benchmark that I have. As a team, Wake Forest shot 38% from the field, 20% from three, and 69% from the line. Those numbers fall well below the 40/35/75 stat line that is needed to win your average ACC game.

Things were not much better on defense. The Deacs allowed the Hokies to shoot 51% from the field, 39% from beyond the arc, and 56% from the free throw line. The Demon Deacons also lost the rebounding battle for the first time since the loss at home against Louisville. Only 10 of the Deacs 23 shots were assisted, good for just over 43.5%.
Moving Forward
Today’s loss drops the Deacs to 14-13 overall, 5-9 in conference play, and 14th in the ACC standings. While Coach Forbes’ team is just above the ACC tournament cut line, they have lost their cushion. Despite being in 14th, the Demon Deacons are only 2 games back from jumping all the way into 8th place. There is still a lot left to play for.
Up next, the Deacs stay on the road and ship up to Boston to take on the Boston College Eagles. This will be the first of three games left on the schedule where the Deacs are favored to win, according to ESPN stats. The only game in which the Deacs are not favored is on the road in Charlottesville when they take on the Virginia Cavaliers next month. Time is running short for the Deacs, with very little room for error. Per top bracketologist NKY of Samson Sports, the Demon Deacons will likely need to reach the finals of the ACC tournament to have a chance at making it into the dance. Just keep winning.
