Boiling Springs, N.C. – Furman softball dropped a pair of games on day two of the Runnin’ Bulldog Classic as Youngstown State prevailed, 8-3, in the first game of the day before Tarleton downed Furman, 7-2 in game two.
Youngstown State 8, Furman 3
Selah Moyer belted a two-run homer in the first inning and added a two-run double the next inning to lead Youngstown State to an 8-3 victory over Furman in the opening game of the day on Saturday.
The Penguins (2-1) opened the scoring on Moyer’s two-run blast and added two more first-inning runs on a dropped fly ball to take a 4-0 lead after one. Moyer delivered a two-out double into the gap in the bottom of the second to plate Emma Gilkerson and Macy Littler to up the margin to 6-0.
Youngstown State maintained a six-run lead into the seventh inning at 8-2 when Furman loaded the bases with one out. Eden Frederick drove in a run with a groundout, but YSU’s Kelsey Ogin got Sylvia Burroughs to fly out to right field with the tying run on deck to end the game.
Ogin held Furman to just two earned runs on six hits over seven innings to earn the victory. She walked two batters and fanned six.Moyer finished 2-for-3 at the plate with four RBI while Littler added two hits.
Kate Stoltzfus collected two hits and swiped two bases for the Paladins while AB Cipalla added a run-scoring double. Jamison Noonan gave up eight runs on seven hits over six innings to absorb the loss for Furman. She walked four batters and struck out two. Just five of the runs scored against the freshman were earned.
Tarleton State 7, Furman 2
In the second game of the day for the Paladins, Tarleton State’s Mikayla Wilson and Madison Runyan combined for seven hits and drove in a combined three runs to help the Texans top Furman, 7-2.
Runyan opened the scoring with a two-out, two-run double down the right field line in the bottom of the first. Addison Wittram drove in a run the following inning to extend the Texan lead to 3-0, but Furman answered in the third inning as AB Cipalla singled with two outs to score Eden Frederick.
Tarleton State (3-0) took control in the bottom of the fifth inning with a four-run frame. Pinch hitter Hayden Fox laced a two-out double into the gap to score two runs and Wilson followed with an RBI single. A dropped fly ball in left field allowed the Texans to push across another run.
Katie Peeler worked a bases loaded walk in the top of the sixth to drive in the Paladins’ second run, but Tarleton State starter Taylor McKean worked out of the jam to maintain the 7-2 lead. McKean picked up the win after holding the Paladins to a pair of runs on four hits in a complete-game effort. She notched six strikeouts and walked two batters.
Wilson went 4-for-4 while Runyan registered three hits and batted in two runs. Frederick went 2-for-3 with two runs to lead the Paladin offense.
Embler (0-2) took the loss for the Paladins after allowing seven runs on 13 hits in six innings in the circle.
Furman (0-4) closes out the Runnin’ Bulldog Classic on Sunday with a 12:30 p.m. first pitch versus Gardner-Webb. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+.
