Deacs Blown Out by Blue Devils
The Deacs fell on the road to the Blue Devils 90-69 on Saturday. The Demon Deacons had a huge Q1 opportunity yesterday. On the road against the #5 Blue Devils would have been a resume boost. Unfortunately, this one wasn’t meant to be. Despite a 23 point night from Juke Harris, Wake Forest was unable to overcome an off night from Nate Calmese and Myles Colvin. The Deacs held an 18-11 lead with about 9 minutes to go in the first half, but entered halftime down 42-31.
Juke Harris – Again
Juke Harris delivered yet another stellar performance, with 23 points on 6-12 shooting, including 5-9 from three. Harris also had 2 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, and a block. Cooper Schweiger got 12 points in the start on 5-7 shooting, including 1-3 from beyond the arc. Tre’Von Spillers also had a strong showing, with 10 points on 4-8 shooting and 2 threes. Spillers also had 3 rebounds and 2 assists. Off the bench, Omaha Biliew had 11 points on 3-7 shooting, 3-5 from three, with 2 rebounds and an assist.
Inside the Numbers
If you only glanced at the box score, you would think the Deacs had kept this one close. As a team, Wake Forest shot 41% from the field, 44% from beyond the arc, and 85% from the free throw line. Not only did the Deacs seemingly have a strong night on offense, but on defense as well. The Demon Deacons almost completely took away the 3 point shot for the Blue Devils, only allowing 28% shooting from three. Once again, free throws made the difference. Duke attempted 24 free throws to Wake Forest’s only 13. Assists were high, turnovers were in single digits, but the ball just wasn’t failing the way the Deacs needed.
The Big Dance
With only 11 games remaining in the regular season, Coach Forbes and the Demon Deacons still have a few Q1 opportunities. The Deacs catch $23 Louisville at home, #18 Clemson at home, and #14 UVA on the road. The Deacs have a similar Q1 record to UNC from last year. Despite an 0-6 record, all 6 games are Q1A games. Despite this, a 3-3 Q2 record could be a problem. The loss to Duke drops Wake Forest to 0-3 so far this season in the Tobacco Road Cup. The Demon Deacons certainly have some work to do to move off the bubble, and not much time left to do it.
Up next, the Deacs stay on the road and head to Pitt to take on the Panthers at 6pm on the 27th. The game will be broadcast on the ACC Network.
