Lady Deacs Lose 3rd Straight Game
The Lady Deacs got stymied on offense for the 3rd game in a row, falling to Cal by a score of 61-52. This is the 3rd straight contest where Wake Forest has failed to score more than 58 points. The Cal Golden Bears get their first ACC win, moving to 1-3 in ACC play and 10-8 overall so far this season. The Lady Deacs move to 12-6 overall and 2-4 in ACC play. Wake Forest has gone ice cold from floor in the last three games, and it has cost them each time.
Mary Carter and Caitlyn Jones led the way scoring with 11 points each, and were the only players to score in double figures for the Deacs. Carter went 4-11 from the floor and 3-7 from three. She also had 7 rebounds and an assist. Jones shot 4-9 from the field, 1-1 from three, with 3 rebounds, 3 assists, and a steal. Milan Brown, Caitlyn Jones, and Opal Bird combined for 10 points, 16 rebounds, 9 assists, and 5 steals. Madisyn Smith led the way off the bench with 8 points on 3-6 shooting and 2-4 from three. She also had 3 rebounds, a steal, and a block.
As a team, the Lady Deacs shot 39% from the field, an abysmal 27% from three, and 67% from the free throw line on 5 combined attempts. The entire Wake Forest bench combined for 2 points on 1-11 shooting and 0-6 from beyond the arc. This also includes a combined 7 rebounds, 2 assists, and 1 steal. This is simply not sustainable in ACC play, which is a concern I voiced earlier this season. The Lady Deacs also continue to get consistently outrebounded by their opponents in ACC losses.
Up next, the Lady Deacs face a tough NC State team that is 12-5 overall and 5-1 in ACC play. The Wolfpack have won 8 of their last 9 games, including a 37 point win over SMU. The game will be at home for the Lady Deacs, and also marks their first contest in the 25-26 Women’s Tobacco Road Cup. This also marks the first game of the year on the women’s side in the Tobacco Road Cup. This is interesting considering all but one men’s team has played at least one game. The game will be at 6pm EST in Winston on ACC Extra.
