Deacs Can’t Complete Comeback

Nate Calmese’ game tying 3 just barely missed as the Deacs fell to the Tar Heels 87-84 in Chapel Hill. North Carolina took a 49-38 plead into halftime after a particularly cold stretch in the 1st half for Wake Forest. Despite a huge performance in the 2nd half, it just was not enough for the Demon Deacons. This game was yet another big Q1 opportunity that Coach Forbes and company were not able to take advantage of despite a strong effort.

Nate Calmese and Juke Harris put on an absolute masterclass performance. Juke Harris had 28 points on 10-16 shooting, going an insane 7-11 from three. Harris also had 6 rebounds, an assist, and 2 steals. Nate Calmese had 28 points on 10-18 from the field, and 5-12 from three. Myles Colvin, Tre’Von Spillers, and Omaha Biliew combined for 9 points on 3-11 shooting, and 0-4 from three. They also had a combined 9 rebounds, 1 assist, and 3 steals.

As a team, the Deacs shot 48% from the field, 40% from three, and 73% from the free throw line. Off the bench, Cooper Schweiger had 9 points on 4-10 from the field, 1-4 from three, and 2 assists. Mekhi Mason also had a strong night with 9 points, 3 rebounds, and a steal. The Deacs outrebounded the Tar Heels 27-25. The big difference in this one was fouls free throws. The Deacs committed 22 fouls, which sent the Tar Heels to the line 30 times. The Heels would convert 20 of those free throw opportunities into points.

The Demon Deacons fall to 10-7 on the year and 1-3 in ACC conference play. Up next, Wake Forest will take on the Florida State Seminoles at 6pm EST on Friday January 17th. No TV broadcast has been announced at this time. The Deacs also drop to 0-2 in the Tobacco Road Cup, which puts them in lace place in the overall standings. The current standings are as follows:

  1. North Carolina 1-0 (14-2)
  2. NC State 1-0 (10-4)
  3. 3. Duke 0-0 (15-1)
  4. Wake Forest 0-2 (10-7)
