GREENVILLE, S.C. — Furman’s women’s basketball team wasted little time asserting control Saturday afternoon, rolling to a 106–21 nonconference victory over Bob Jones at Timmons Arena. The Paladins used relentless defense, crisp ball movement and a deep rotation to turn the game into a rout early, improving to 8–7 overall as they head toward Southern Conference play.
Fast Start Sets the Tone
Furman took command from the opening tip, overwhelming Bob Jones with pressure defense and quick offensive execution. The Paladins opened the game on an extended run that produced a 28–2 lead by the end of the first quarter, holding the Bruins scoreless for long stretches while forcing repeated turnovers. Furman pushed the pace in transition and consistently converted second-chance opportunities, leaving little doubt about the outcome early.
The dominance continued into the second quarter as Furman stretched the margin to 69–11 at halftime. Ball movement created open looks throughout the half, and the Paladins attacked the paint while also knocking down perimeter shots, preventing Bob Jones from ever settling defensively.
Balanced Scoring Fuels the Blowout
Furman’s depth was on full display as multiple players contributed across all four quarters. Clare Coyle led the way with an efficient scoring performance, finishing with 16 points on 8-of-9 shooting, consistently converting around the basket and capitalizing on defensive breakdowns. Sophia Pearl added steady offensive production while spacing the floor, and Raina McGowens was active on both ends, contributing scoring and facilitating the offense.
The Paladins continued to rotate players freely in the second half without a drop in intensity. Alyssa Ervin and Samaria Taylor provided energy from the backcourt, helping maintain defensive pressure and keep the offense flowing as Furman surpassed the 100-point mark before the final buzzer.
Defense Dictates the Game
While the offense piled up points, Furman’s defense set the foundation for the lopsided result. The Paladins limited Bob Jones to 21 total points, contesting nearly every shot and forcing frequent turnovers that led directly to transition baskets. Bob Jones struggled to generate clean looks for much of the afternoon, with Jenna Brooks leading the Bruins in scoring but finding little room to operate against Furman’s length and pressure.
Looking Ahead
Saturday’s win gave Furman a confidence boost heading into conference play, as the Paladins now turn their attention to the start of the Southern Conference schedule. Furman opens league action Jan. 8 at ETSU, followed by a challenging road matchup at Chattanooga, looking to carry forward the defensive intensity and balanced scoring that defined Saturday’s dominant performance.
