Deacs Suffer Brutal Loss to Commodores
The Deacs were completely outmatched today as they fell 98-67 to the Vanderbilt Commodores. The normally consistent offense went totally anemic. The defense utterly collapsed, unable to cover the outside shot. The only real positive statistic of note was the rebounding. I have said all year long that the lack of consistency from the bench was going to eventually bite the Demon Deacons, and boy was a I right. The lack of scoring depth behind Juke Harris and Myles Colvin was on full display tonight. It is hard to believe this is the same team that took Michigan the distance.
Only two players managed to score in double figures in this game. Myles Colvin and Juke Harris combined for 39 points on 10-26 shooting, including 4-16 from three. They also went 15/18 from the free throw line with only 1 combined assist. The entire rest of the team combined for just 28 points on 9 of 28 shooting across nine players. The Deacs managed to outrebound the Commodores 34-29 despite the lopsided final score. 21 of those rebounds came on defense, while the other 13 came on the offensive glass.
Things weren’t much better on the defensive end. The Deacs allowed 59% shooting from the field, 50% from three, with 23 assists. The Demon Deacons also committed 17 turnovers and only had 8 total assists. Tyler Nickel led the way for Vandy with 26 points on 8-12 shooting and an absurd 8-10 from three. 5 Commodores scored in double figures on the night.
Wake Forest faces a frustrated NC State team led by Will Wade in Raleigh on New Years Day. Tipoff is at noon on ESPN. The Wolfpack have gone 8-4 to open the season, yet Wade has been very open about the current state of the team. There is also the issue that coveted transfer Ven ALlen Lubin has played 28 minutes or more in all 4 losses. Time will tell for the Wolfpack, but there is an opportunity here for Wake Forest.
