Deacs Outlast Longwood
The Deacs survive thanks to a late 3 pointer from Myles Colvin to beat the Longwood Lancers 71-68 on Wednesday night. Juke Harris led the way for the Demon Deacons with 19 points, with both Nate Calmese and Myles Colvin both scoring in double figures. While its always good to get the win, this one was a bit ugly.
As a team, the Demon Deacons struggled heavily on offense. The Deacs shot 41% from the field, only 21% from three, and 73% from the free throw line. The Wake Forest also got outrebounded again, 41-35. There is nothing wrong with getting outrebounded if you are playing small ball lineups and hitting threes, but the shots just weren’t falling last night. Juke Harris went ice cold from beyond the arc, missing all 6 of his three point attempts. The starters combined for 3-17 from three, a number that will almost certainly be punished in ACC play.
Juke Harris had 19 points on 4-12 shooting and 11-14 from the free throw line. He finished with 8 rebounds, 2 assists, and 4 turnovers. Nate Calmese had 12 points on 5-6 shooting and 2-3 from three. He also had 2 assists, a rebound, 2 turnovers, and a steal. Myles Colvin had 11 points on 3-7 shooting and 4-4 from the line. Colvin has the game winning shot, along with 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 turnovers.
The Demon Deacons have had a great start to the season, holding a 9-3 record. Coach FOrbes picked up his 100th win as the gaffer of the program. Juke Harris continues to be one of the best players in the conference, and Myles Colvin and Nate Calmese are both phenomenal complimentary pieces. As long as this team can stay above 30% from three during conference play, this is going to be a special season.
