Coach Gebbia Gets 200th Win

The Wake Forest Demon Deacons basketball team had a phenomenal Thanksgiving holiday. Over Thanksgiving week, The Lady Deacs saw action in San Juan, Puerto Rico as they took part in the Puerto Rico Shootout. Wake Forest drew Morgan State, UCF, and then Illinois State in the tournament.
Up first, the Lady Deacs handily dispatched Morgan State by a score of 93-35. This was a special occasion, as this was Coach Gebbia’s 200th career win! Congratulations to Coach Gebbia on reaching such a massive milestone in her career. Milan Brown led the way for the Lady Deacs with 19 points on a perfect 6-6 shooting while also going 7-8 from the FT line and 9 rebounds. Kennedy Moore and Caitlyn Jones each had 15 points. Moore went 3 -4 from three, and Jones went 9-12 from the FT line.
The Lady Deacs next defeated their first power conference opponent of the year with a 65-60 win over the UCF Golden Knights. Caitlyn Jones led Wake Forest in scoring against the Knights with 17 on the day on 8-12 shooting. Grace Oliver was the only other player to score in double figures with 13 points on 6-10 shooting. The bench actually managed to outscore the starters for the Deacs by a score of 34-31. Despite the rough performance from the starters, this was still a team win, with 20 total assists. Defense continues to lead the way, as the Lady Deacs only allowed 32 percent from the field on the day.
In their third and final game of the Puerto Rico Shootout, the Demon Deacons took down the Illinois State Redbirds 57-44 behind another great defensive performance. Grace Oliver and Mary Carter each had 11 points to lead the way for the Lady Deacs on offense. On defense, the Lady Deacs absolutely smothered the Redbirds, allowing only 14 percent shooting from 3. Wake Forest was also able to narrowly win the rebound battle 35-32. Despite winning the boards, only 5 of those 35 came on offense for the Lady Deacs.
There is still plenty of room for improvement from this Wake Forest Demon Deacons team. But there’s a lot to like to. The Lady Deacs continue to find ways to win games regardless of the opponent. Caitlyn Jones has been a revelation off the bench more than once already this season. This team continues to force opponents into shooting incredibly poorly. As long as these trends continue, I see no reason why this winning streak can’t continue. The Demon Deacons are back in action on Wednesday December 3rd against the William and Mary Tribe at 11:30AM.
