Paladins Can’t Shake Shooting Slump in Road Defeat
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — Furman walked into the McLeod Center on Friday night looking to stack a statement road win onto an early-season schedule that already included tests against High Point, Troy and Columbia International. Instead, the Paladins ran into a Northern Iowa team that was locked in on both ends of the floor and never really let go. The Panthers controlled the rhythm in a 70–54 loss for Furman, using efficient shooting and steady defense to gradually build a lead that the Paladins could never quite crack. UNI Athletics+1
Furman didn’t lack effort or toughness. What it lacked was shot-making. The Paladins finished the night 22-for-56 from the field and just 4-for-30 from three (13.3 percent), numbers that turned long possessions and decent looks into empty trips and put constant pressure on their defense to be nearly perfect. First-Half Drought Lets Panthers Take Control
Early on, the matchup looked like it might settle into a back-and-forth grind. Furman moved the ball crisply in the half court, got Charles Johnston loose on the perimeter and played solid positional defense on the other end. But once Northern Iowa tightened its pressure and started stringing together stops, the game tilted.
The Panthers used a key run midway through the first half to turn a one- or two-possession margin into real separation, capitalizing on Furman’s missed threes and a few empty possessions to build a 36–24 halftime lead. UNI Athletics+1
Furman’s issues weren’t about getting looks so much as finishing them. The Paladins shot 11-for-29 from the field and 2-for-17 from deep in the opening 20 minutes, repeatedly coming up empty from behind the arc even when the ball found the right shooter in rhythm. Johnston gave Furman a lift with three made threes in the game and finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double, but his shooting alone couldn’t offset the team-wide slump. Bowser’s Efficiency Not Enough to Fuel a Comeback
Furman came out of the locker room with some juice, trying to punch back by attacking the paint and getting downhill early in possessions. The spark came most consistently from Cooper Bowser, who turned in the kind of rugged, efficient performance that usually anchors a road upset bid.
Bowser led the Paladins with 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting, adding four rebounds, a block and an assist in 31 minutes. He was assertive around the rim, finishing through contact and giving Furman a dependable interior option when the perimeter wasn’t cooperating. UNI Athletics
Behind him, Johnston’s double-double stood out as another bright spot. The guard finished 4-for-9 from the floor, 3-for-7 from three and pulled down 10 boards, including two on the offensive glass, while also chipping in an assist and a block. UNI Athletics
Alex Wilkins, who had erupted for 26 points against Columbia International earlier in the week, Fox Sports had a tougher night. He scored 10 points on 4-of-14 shooting, went 0-for-9 from deep, but still found ways to contribute with four assists and a perfect 2-for-2 mark at the line. UNI Athletics
Despite those individual efforts, every time Furman threatened to chip the deficit into single digits, Northern Iowa had an answer. Panthers guard Trey Campbell fueled the hosts with 18 points, while Tristan Smith and Leon Bond III each added 13, and forward William Hornseth chipped in 11, giving UNI four double-figure scorers on a night when Furman had just two. Second Half Runs Meet a Wall of UNI Shot-Making
Furman’s second half looked better statistically: the Paladins shot 40.7 percent from the floor, hit two more threes and finally saw a couple of perimeter looks fall. But Northern Iowa matched or exceeded almost every punch, shooting better than 50 percent after the break and continuing to punish even small defensive lapses. UNI Athletics+1
The Paladins tried to manufacture momentum with defensive stops, rebounding and transition pushes. Ben Vander Wal provided some glue in the middle of the floor with six points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals, while Tom House added five rebounds and two free throws despite an 0-for-7 night from the field. Off the bench, Eddrin Bronson gave Furman seven points and a three-pointer in 20 minutes, and Abijah Franklin came in and immediately made his mark with a bucket and a steal. UNI Athletics
UNI, however, never let the game flip. When Furman pushed the pace, the Panthers answered with composure in the half court. When the Paladins tried to squeeze them defensively, UNI responded with inside-out action that led to high-percentage looks. The Panthers’ lead grew to more than 20 at one point, and while Furman played through the final horn and trimmed the margin, the hill was simply too steep. UNI Athletics+1
Stat Sheet Underscores What Went Wrong
The numbers tell a story Furman won’t find surprising when it queues up the film. The Paladins finished 4-for-30 from three, turned it over 13 times, and managed just six second-chance points and nine points from the bench despite battling to a 33–33 draw on the glass. UNI Athletics+1
For a team that leans heavily on spacing, ball movement and perimeter shot-making, that combination is a tough recipe on the road against a disciplined Missouri Valley opponent. The good news for Furman is that the effort and structure were there; the bad news is that the shots weren’t. On another night with similar looks and more normal percentages, this game probably feels very different.
Paladins Look to Turn Page After Tough Road Test
The loss drops Furman to 1–3, but it also adds another data point against a high-quality mid-major on the road in mid-November. With nonconference play still unfolding, the Paladins have time to convert these lessons into progress before Southern Conference games arrive. Furman University+1
If Furman can cut down on the turnovers, keep getting this level of activity from rebounders like Johnston and Vander Wal, and pair Bowser’s efficiency inside with more typical shooting nights from Wilkins and the rest of the backcourt, there’s still plenty of upside for this group as the season moves forward.
