Wofford Gears Up for a Defining Week Against Auburn and Bellarmine

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — The Wofford Terriers head into their toughest stretch of the young season, facing two road battles that could shape their early identity. First up, a marquee showdown at No. 20 Auburn on Tuesday night, followed by a Saturday afternoon trip to Louisville to face Bellarmine.

After splitting their opening two contests, Wofford (1–1) is beginning to find its rhythm under head coach Kevin Giltner. The Terriers rebounded from a flat loss to George Mason by outpacing Milwaukee 86–76 last weekend, showcasing the kind of toughness and depth they’ll need in this week’s matchups.

Showtime at Neville Arena

Wofford’s trip to Auburn isn’t just another nonconference matchup — it’s a chance to prove they can hang with high-major competition. The Tigers (2–0) have roared out of the gate behind their trademark physicality and pace. They average nearly 95 points per game, led by forward Keyshawn Hall, a dynamic scorer who can create mismatches all over the floor, and guard Kevin Overton, whose quick-trigger defense fuels transition buckets.

For the Terriers, it’ll come down to poise and discipline. Freshman guard Kahmare Holmes continues to emerge as the offensive spark, scoring 24 points against Milwaukee with fearless drives into traffic. Beside him, forward Brian Sumpter has been a force on the glass, recording 21 points and 11 rebounds off the bench. The pair headline a roster that’s still finding balance but shows flashes of real chemistry.

If Wofford wants to stay in it, three things must happen: they need to win the rebounding battle, limit turnovers against Auburn’s press, and hit timely perimeter shots. Brendan Rigsbee and Cayden Vasko can stretch defenses, while Luke Flynn provides a steady hand at point. A competitive showing in Neville Arena could set the tone for the weeks ahead — even if it comes without a win.

Quick Turnaround in Louisville

Just a few days later, Wofford heads north to face Bellarmine, a team that might not have Auburn’s star power but certainly brings fight. The Knights (0–2) are still hunting for their first win but remain dangerous at home. They play with spacing and shoot-heavy tempo, testing teams that fail to close out on the perimeter.

This matchup is all about focus. After an emotional night at Auburn, it’s easy for young teams to let down — but the Terriers can’t afford it. Expect Giltner to emphasize physical play in the post and disciplined rotations on defense. Sumpter’s rebounding and Holmes’ pace will again be key factors, while depth pieces like Nils Machowski could see increased minutes to keep legs fresh.

Terriers’ Identity Beginning to Take Shape

Wofford’s roster is young but loaded with promise. Under Giltner, they’ve already shown growth from Game 1 to 2 — sharper decision-making, better defensive rotations, and a willingness to share the ball. The chemistry between Holmes and Sumpter has been immediate, and their bench has injected real energy.

What this week offers is a proving ground: a high-major test in Auburn’s rowdy environment, then a gritty follow-up against a disciplined Bellarmine squad. Two road wins would turn heads, but even one competitive showing and a road victory would mark progress for a team still gelling.

Eyes on the Road, Hearts in Spartanburg

The Terriers know that games like these build character — the kind that pays off come SoCon play. Expect them to play loose but hungry, ready to show that this new-look squad won’t back down from anyone.

Tip-off for Tuesday’s matchup at Auburn is set for 8 p.m. ET on SEC Network+, followed by Saturday’s road trip to Bellarmine at 2 p.m. ET on ESPN+.

If Wofford keeps the same edge it showed last weekend, this could be the week that puts the Terriers on the national radar.
