The No. 5 Wake Forest field hockey team continued its remarkable run of form on Friday evening, defeating Stanford, 3-1, at Kentner Stadium to push its winning streak to 12 straight victories. With the win, the Demon Deacons (12-2, 5-0 ACC) continued their longest winning streak since 2006, a season that culminated in a trip to the NCAA Championship game. Wake Forest also remains unbeaten at home this fall, improving to 8-0 at Kentner Stadium for the first time since 2005.

After a Mia Montag penalty corner conversion in the opening quarter, Wake Forest’s attack corner unit extended its streak of scoring in every match during the 12-game surge. The group has now accounted for 21 of the team’s 51 goals on the year, continuing to set the tone for the Deacs’ high-powered offense. The goal from Montag, assisted by sophomore Lena Keller, marked her fifth goal of the season and first since scoring two in a win over UMass-Lowell on Sept. 14. For the second-straight game, senior Amelia Frey found the back of the net, getting the Deacs a two-goal cushion in the first quarter. It marked the fifth goal of her career, with the other three coming during her 2023 sophomore season.

Junior Lauren Storey scored her team-best tying 14th goal of the season in the third quarter to put the Demon Deacons up 3-0, essentially putting the game away for good. Storey has now scored at least one goal in 10 of the last 11 games, netting all 14 goals in that time span. With Frey’s goal in the first quarter, the Demon Deacons reached 50 goals this season, marking the first time since 2022 to score 50 or more goals.

How It Happened
The Demon Deacons wasted no time getting on the board, as Montag opened the scoring just 2:32 into the match off a penalty corner, finishing a setup from Keller to make it 1-0.
Wake Forest doubled its advantage in the 11th minute when Frey found the back of the cage for her second goal of the season, converting a feed from Logan Marthinus to extend the lead to 2-0.
Senior Ellie Todd came up with a key save late in the period to keep Stanford off the board, as Wake controlled possession and outshot the Cardinal 7-2.
Wake Forest maintained pressure throughout the frame, earning a pair of penalty corners and generating two quality looks from Mia Schoenbeck.
The Deacs continued to dominate the stat sheet, holding a 9-3 overall shot advantage, but couldn’t add to the lead before halftime.
Todd and the defense held Stanford without a shot on goal for the final 12 minutes of the half, preserving the 2-0 cushion.
Storey added insurance at the 40:47 mark, finishing a pass from Flo Tuthill for her 14th goal of the season to make it 3-0.
Wake continued to generate offensive pressure, while Todd remained sharp in net with a pair of saves on Stanford’s late penalty corners.
The Demon Deacons entered the final frame with a 3-0 lead and a commanding 15-6 edge in shots.
Stanford pulled one back in the 57th minute.
The Cardinal pressed late with multiple corners and five shots in the final three minutes, but Todd made another key save and Mia Montag added a defensive stop on the goal line to protect the lead.
Wake Forest closed out the 3-1 victory, its 12th consecutive win and fifth straight in ACC play, remaining unbeaten at Kentner Stadium.

Quotables
“I’m incredibly proud of the hockey that we played in the first half. We started making some uncharacteristic plays in the third quarter. We didn’t learn the lessons, and then in the fourth quarter, there were probably three or four minutes of great hockey. And then, we just gave the game to Stanford by changing the momentum, and literally not playing to our principles. I’m very disappointed in our discipline. It’s a lesson that we will take, with a win, and you better believe we’ll make corrections.” – Head Coach Jen Averill
