WCU Football Looks to Carry Momentum Against The Citadel Bulldogs

The WCU Catamount football team goes on the road to Charleston to take on The Citadel Bulldogs in yet another tough SoCon matchup at 2pm EST on ESPN+. The Catamounts, led by record-breaking QB Taron Dickens, are riding high after a major blowout win over the Furman Paladins at home last week 52-7 thanks in large part to the defenses best performance of the year. The defense forced 5 turnovers including 2 in the end zone, giving the offense all the time they needed to pick apart the Paladins. The Citadel Bulldogs come into this weekend riding a 2 game win streak, and currently hold 3rd place in the SoCon standings in a tie with Furman. The Bulldogs went on the road to UTC and came away with a 28-10 win, and opened SoCon play with a 40-13 route of a mostly lifeless Samford team. It remains to be seen who will start under center for the Bulldogs, as both Quentin Hayes and Cobey Thompkins have seen meaningful snaps this year. Thompkins has gone 22/36 for 334 yards, 3 TDs, and 1 pick, while Hayes has gone 17/29 for 154 yards, 1 TD, and 1 interception.
Why are the passing numbers so low? Its The Citadel, they like to run the dang ball. The Bulldogs are the 12th best rushing offense in the country, and the best in the SoCon, averaging 214.2 yards per game on the ground. Meanwhile, the Catamounts are still in the top 10 nationally on offense. Both defensive units are going to have their work cut out for them come kickoff on Saturday. As always, they difference maker for WCU will once again be whether or not the defense can create turnovers, and whether or not they can get stops in the red zone. Look for Dickens to continue to do Heisman-worthy things (yes, I meant to say Heisman instead of Payton), and hopefully for the defense to produce another stalwart effort to follow a standout performance last week.
