Catamount Defense Stifles, WCU Football Wins
It finally happened. The WCU football defense absolutely steamrolled over the Furman Paladins in a decisive 52-7 victory in the friendly confines of E.J. Whitmire stadium. The Catamount defense put together their best performance of the season, forcing five turnovers from the Paladins, including two interceptions in the end zone, forcing a touchback each time. While Furman gaining 356 yards of total offense is still a slight cause for concern, this might be one of the best defenses in the country when it comes to takeaways. If the Western defense wasn’t creating turnovers, it was forcing long 3rd downs, allowing the unit to get off the field, unlike what has happened in some of the earlier games this season.
Not to be outdone, record-breaking quarterback Taron Dickens went for 17/24 passing, good for 220 yards and 4 TDs to four different receivers. The rushing attack led the way on offense for the Catamounts, amassing an absurd 306 yards and 2 TDs on 44 combined carries, including an impressive 66-yard scamper from backup quarterback Isaac Lee towards the end of the contest. The WCU offense continues to be one of if not THE best offense in the country, while the defense might be hitting its stride at the right time of the season. Don’t be surprised if the Catamounts start receiving attention from top 25 voters, especially if the winning ways continue. Up next, Western travels down to Charleston, South Carolina to take on The Citadel Bulldogs at 2pm EST on ESPN+. The Catamounts now have a firm hold on 2nd place in the SoCon with the win over Furman, let’s see if they can keep it.
