Another week in the books and it was the absolute embodiment of “insanity.”
Let’s get down to it, eh?
Texas, Penn State Embarrassed on the Road
Penn State opened their matchup at UCLA as 25.5-point favorites and looked to brush their loss against Oregon off but that all but went to plan.
The Bruins shocked the CFB world by winning 42-37.
Nico Iamaleava had an absolute killer performance against the Nittany Lions, throwing for 166 yards and two touchdowns, adding another 128 yards on the ground and three additional scores. The former Tennessee Volunteer led the Bruins to their first win on the season and their first win against AP Top-10 teams in 17 games.
On the other side of the country, the Texas Longhorns headed to the Swamp to take on the Florida Gators as 6.5-point favorites but quickly lost a shot at the playoffs after losing 29-21. Arch Manning didn’t impress much even with 263 passing yards and two touchdowns, as he also threw a pair of interceptions.
DJ Lagway and Dallas Wilson were the stars of the show during this SEC showdown. Lagway threw for 298 yards on 21-of-28 passing and Wilson caught 111 of those yards on 6 receptions, hauling in both Lagway touchdown passes.
Bill Belichick on the Hot Seat?
The “Chapel Bill” hype train has officially been derailed, doused in gasoline, lit on fire, and blown up.
The Tar Heels got walloped by Clemson after coming off a bye week and a previous loss to Central Florida. The Tigers came out of the gate with a 75-yard passing touchdown from receiver Antonio Williams to fellow receiver T.J. Moore and kept their foot on the gas until early in the fourth quarter. Keenan Stadium was nearly empty going into the second half of Saturday’s game.
Belichick’s first year as a collegiate head coach has been an absolute nightmare for all UNC fans. The Heels are 0-3 against Power 4 teams, being outscored by a combined total of 120-33. Despite the torrent struggles, Belichick remained adamant.
“The main thing we need to do is keep doing what we’re doing but do them better,” he said following the 38-10 loss to Clemson. “Fundamentally we’re not doing the wrong things, we’re just not doing them well enough.”
The implosion in Chapel Hill came just days after GM Mike Lombardi’s letter to donors became public, noting that this year was a “rebuild” campaign for Carolina.
Rebuilding is not what Carolina fans want to hear right now, especially amidst a 2-3 start to the season and being promised that this year’s team would be national championship contenders.
Perhaps all Bill needs to do is focus on the Carolina blue and not digging the gold.
Revenge in Tuscaloosa
Alabama looked to finally silence Diego Pavia after last year’s stunning loss to the Commodores.
Pavia famously told On3 ahead of Vanderbilt’s matchup with the Crimson Tide that “if we play our game, it won’t be close.”
Well, he got one thing right: the game certainly wasn’t close.
The Tide washed over the ‘Dores behind Ty Simpson’s 340 passing yards and two touchdowns. Alabama held Pavia to 198 passing yards, a single touchdown, and an interception to compliment nicely.
The game looked like it was going to be a shootout early, as Sedrik Alexander found the endzone off a 65 yard scamper. Ryan Williams hauled in a dime from Simpson from 14 yards out to even the score with 9:22 left in the second quarter. The Commodores marched back down the field, draining 4:23 off the clock and scoring off a Alexander receiving touchdown from Pavia. Alabama equalized once again after Ty Simpson connected with Germie Bernard on a 27 yard pass to close the half. Alabama never looked back as they scored 16 unanswered points to end the game.
Even after being drubbed by the Tide, Pavia continued to run his mouth, telling a Bama fan after the game, “I do whatever the f— I want.” Safe to say that karma might catch up with the Commodores sooner or later, even after only dropping to 5-1.
Miami, Carson Beck Hold Off Rival Noles in Tallahassee
Carson Beck looked phenomenal against Florida State, throwing for 241 yards and four touchdowns, without turning the ball over. He connected with Malachi Toney twice in the endzone and led the Hurricanes past a near complete comeback by FSU.
After trailing early from a Jake Weinberg field goal, the Canes scored four times before the fourth quarter to put them up 28-3 on the road.
Remember when the Falcons were up over the Patriots in the Super Bowl 28-3 and then blew that lead and lost? Well Miami almost came to that reality as Florida State scored thrice in the fourth quarter. The comeback fell short though thanks to a stifling Miami defense that forced the Seminoles to kick a field goal with 20 seconds left in the game.
Miami leads series between the two Florida schools 37-33 all-time, thanks to Carson Beck and the offensive efforts. Not to mention that they potentially dropped the Noles out of playoff contention and snagged bragging rights as the cherry on top.
