Dickens Leads Catamount Football Against Wofford

By Coach Steve
The WCU Catamount football team looks to make it three straight wins as they go on the road against the Wofford Terriers on Saturday at 130pm EST on ESPN+. Taron Dickens did just enough last week for the Catamounts to survive against CAA foe Campbell. Western now enters the SoCon -only part of their schedule, needing to win out to have a chance at an at-large playoff bid. The Wofford Terriers have one of the worst offenses I have ever seen, and I cover UNC. Across four games, the Terriers average just 13 points per game, and have scored more than 20 points in a game only once this season. The Terrier offense has had more than 200 yards of total offense only one time this season. But that doesn’t mean they are a bad team, however. Despite the anemic offense, Wofford has lost its 3 FCS vs FCS games by a combined 6 points. The Terrier defense is one of the best in the country, allowing no more than 22 points against FCS competition so far this season. This Wofford Terrier team cannot be taken lightly, and that is why they matchup favorably with the Catamounts.
WCU has arguably the best QB in Division 1, and an incredibly dynamic offense. The Catamounts also have possibly the worst defense in the country through five games. If you watch the games, you’ve seen this defensive unit show they are capable of making big stop on 3rd and 4th down in critical moments, but also show that they will give up points to just about anybody. They create turnovers, but also play down to the level of their opponent. Taron Dickens and this offense, featuring guys like Camury Reid and James Tyre and Patrick Boyd Jr, is arguably the best in the country, and that HAS to be enough to win games. The defensive struggles must stop if the Catamounts want to get this team, and this town, a trip to playoffs. The biggest thing this defense has going for it is the turnover game, and I expect that to continue. The defense has done a great job of creating takeaways in key moments. There is certainly plenty to build on, but the progressive improvement hasn’t shown up yet this season week-to-week. That said, the Catamounts should come out on top on Saturday, the only question I have is how close it will be. Make sure you tune in at 1:30pm EST Saturday on ESPN+, the WCU offense vs the Wofford defense is one of the biggest matchups of the weekend in FCS football.
