Taron Dickens Powers WCU Football Win, Questions Linger on Defense

By Coach Steve
Taron Dickens went 26/40 for 427 yards and 4 TDs as Catamount football beat Campbell on the road 42-35. James Tyre had a standout day, with 6 receptions for 101 yards receiving and a TD, as well as a 61 yards passing TD. The Catamounts got up to a 28-3 lead at one point before giving up a late TD right before halftime. The offense continued to function at a high rate of success, with 564 total yards of offense. That being said, it is time to acknowledge the problems on defense for the Cats from Cullowhee.
The defense came up with a few big stops throughout the game this weekend, but also nearly blew a 25 point lead. For whatever reason, the defensive unit continues to be the reason that this Catamount team cannot put teams away. The matchup against Campbell was the final out of conference opportunity for WCU to really make a statement, and they failed to do so, from an at-large playoff spot perspective. Saturday’s result all but guarantees the Cats will have to run the table in the SoCon to have a chance at making the playoffs this year.
